I am enjoying this forum very much. I need a few suggestions on tried and
true methods for watering tomatoes. I currently use cages. Thanks for your
help in advance.
Hello Bill,
Tomatoes require even watering throughout the season. Using a good mulch
not only keeps weeds down, it also reduces soil moisture fluctuations. A
neat idea that I found in National Gardening's Book of Tomatoes…"cut the
tops from some gallon-size cans, punch holes in the bottoms, and set them
in the ground with only about an inch of the can showing above the surface.
Use 2 cans near each tomato plant and fill them 2 or 3 times a week – or
more often, if needed. This method directs water right to the root zone of
the plants and little water is wasted.

Bill – i use soaker hoses; tomatoes are incredible water-lovers and like
even, deep watering. Soakers also keep water off the leaves, which tends
to keep down fungal attacks. Tomatoes are one of the most water-intensive
vegetables in the whole garden – guzzlers! And they grow so well here in
New Jersey, of course…
