hello And HELP!!!
As a well seasoned computer user to an Atari ST to an IBM, as well
as a C-64, Atari 800 etc etc…I never had so many problems dearchiving
software as much as I'm having with the Amiga. I am well versed in Lharc
for the IBM and Atari (wrote my own source in C on both) as well as zip,arc
and sit for mac. but my real problem is d/l software from CIS and other
bbs's. You see with the Atari & IBM I download a file and its there. I can
see it. I know it exsists and takes up space. Unfortunely I have been
experimenting with the Amiga and after many hours of reading manuals (does
anyone still do that these days? I stopped in 1970) I found that I must
load the cli file. Fine. So I
did. There was the file. Now all I needed was that LZH program. So I TRY
to find a unlzhed lzh file. Should I find one?-NOT!! I download what I
think is a non-compressed unlzher (lzh111.lha) and so I loaded cli and went
to load the file. Being experenced in Unix, CP/M I TRY to load that nasty
little lzher..'object file no module'-or something like that. Well what
should I do? I've got a bunch of files (mostly a collection of graphics and
demos to show off the Amiga) but the nasty little bugger doesn't care if it
is a module or what. What ddoes an Amiga user do?
To make a long story short…..I need to unlzh a file. I need a
program that is an exacutable..not already lzhed. I would download a lzher
but they are all compressed. Lately my Amiga has been covered with dust and
buried under papers since it is too unconmfusing to uuse. The only thing I
use it for is playing THE THREE STOOGES. HELP!
After a quick search through the Archive/Cruncher Library of this very
Forum, I think I found the files you need. First, you need LHARC.EXE, the
executable version of LHArc that you can use to unArc the newer programs.
Also you might want LZ.LZH which is the newest de-arcer for files with the
LZH and .LHA extensions.
Your going to find that your CLI is indispensible for serious work on the
Amiga. I've got a NewCLI command in my Startup-Sequence so that when I boot
up, my CLI is ready and waiting for some serious C coding.

The CLI isn't a file, it is the command line interface, much like the
system prompt you get on a PC (A:\>). If you type dir from the the cli,
you will get a directory listing that will look very familiar to you if you
work on PC's.

Come on Tom… you know better than that… look at the file extension.
Even in IBMland, you'd recognize that a file with an .lha extension isn't
an EXEcutable file.
If you look in the ARCHIVERS/CRUNCHERS library of this forum, you'll find a
file called LHARC.EXE. That'll do the trick for you. You might also check
out a file called ARCHLP.EXE which is a tutorial on the different archiving
programs. I'm sorry you're having so much trouble… but I'm sure that once
you get the right programs in place, it will be very familiar to you!

Look in Library 16 of AmigaUser for LHARC.EXE. It is an unpacked,
executable version of the unpacker for the .LZH files. If you need to
unpack ARC or ZOO files, there are ARC.EXE and ZOO.EXE as well.

Tom, You are getting the same drivel as me about "files not being an object
module". I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me or the
machine itself. I've known PDP's, DEC's and VAX/VMS mainframes be easier to
use than this. Another thing – even with 2 drives I've never known so much
disk swapping…. anyway, if you find the answer please let me know. Bill

Have you ever considered reading the manuals that come with the machine?
The error "file not an object module" is both fairly self explanatory (it's
NOT an executable program) AND it's described in the manual.
Vic, The only manuals I got with the machine are the "A500 User's Manual
English" and the Enhancer Software manual for Amigados 1.3. All the User's
Manual tells me is "This error may occur if you try to open a tool that has
been damaged. Try making a new copy of the tool from your original disk". I
have downloaded LHARC 3 times now and one was a direct binmail copy which I
am assured worked. Just in case CIS downloads are not coming through
properly, I took one copy from a UK service and got exactly the same
problem. It probably has something to do with paths and libraries or
whatever, but the manuals I have got are pretty useless on that score. Bill
