I believe that some of the tmodes are defined as underscan.
Truevision doesn't mention it though. I have it on some notes from
GSL downtown.
Robert- If you find out, please let me know. It's not a real big
deal, but it is handy from time to time. Kevin Krell told me that
Tips+ should allow me to switch to it but I can't seem to get my
Tips+ to do it. I hit F6 and it just sits there and looks at me. I
don't think I did anything wierd when I installed it, in fact if I
remember right it installs itself. Oh well, I you come across
anything, I'd be interested. Thanks.
512×400 is underscan. All F6 does is show the safe title area when
in TIPS+ – it does not change the aspect ratio.
Maybe my concept of underscan is flawed. I guess what I'm wanting is
the change in aspect ratio that I used to get with my T16 and F3. My
problem is the left and right edges of the image. With F3, old Tips
used to change the aspect ratio to 1.1(I think) and give me a black
border on the left and right of my screen. Like I said, it's not a
real big deal, but I have noticed on some of my video captures that
I'm getting a small vertical black smear on the left of my image.
It's like it's not grabbing that left most part of the frame. I can
only see it when I rescale the image or look at it in RIO. But if I
were to use that entire frame as a texture map, the black would
appear and tile along with everything else. That's why I thought it
would be handy. Thanks for your help.
If that smear shows up on a texture, then you've got a board (or
input source) problem, nothing to do with overscan. Again, as I said,
512×400 is an underscan resolution, but border is all around. The 512×482
resolution in underscan, with borders left & right, I don't believe is
available anymore. Other than being a different aspect ratio, there really
is no reason not to be able to use overscan for all operations.
Actually I think my problem is with the centering on my card. (Just a
guess). Because I can't see the leftmost and rightmost edges on my
monitor, I have difficulty setting the centering. About 4% of the left
side is out of view and about 2% of the right. I have fiddled with the pot
on the back of the card to get my centering close. I did some captures
once that were laid back to tape and the registration was way off, so I
tried to adjust it with the screw on the back. It helped, but I really
need to work on it some more. Probably the easiest way would be to setup
the card on a monitor that will switch to underscan so I can see all of my
edges and center accordingly.
There's also centering through software. Why the H— are you
messing with sub-carrier phase? Darn, now the board has to be set to spec
again.

Is there a document available that explains what the adjustments are for a
Targa+? Or do you have to send it to TV every time you want to have it
checked out/aligned?

Truevision has a Targa+ Calibration Kit. Which includes documentation,
and a calibration software disc for set up of the board.
However, to use this kit you must have a video test signal generator,
vectorscope, and waveform monitor to use for proper setup of the board
Without these items the kit is useless. Any attempt to adjust the board
without these tools will result in having a board out of spec.

Steve Cahill has answered your question adequately (twice, even).
The Targa+ Calibration Kit is $200. Kits are also available for the older
Targas, the ATVista and the Nuvista & Nuvista+ boards.

Thanks for the info, I'll check into getting calibration software. I'll
admit I did tweak the pot on the back of the card myself, and your last
comment worried me.

If you're trying to get a 1:1 aspect ratio with the targa forget about
under scan and 400 lines. Use 640×480, 800×600, 648×486(video), or
1024×756. All these are 1:1.
