Craig, I'm doing a seminar on installation and performance. One of the chapters in my hand-out is exp-ext memory. What info can I download / get / find / buy etc. Can you help. Any utilities you can recommend? Thanks Greg

Greg: Well, David Gari is pretty knowledgeable on the subject when it comes to the Phar Lap Dos extender features and AutoCAD's use of extended or expanded memory. This is the most important aspect of a 386 version installtion. There isn't much you can do to improve upon a no nonsense installation unless you have a driver that requires extended or expanded memory for birdseye and display list requirements… and then you should have a protected mode version of the driver anyway. As far as running AutoCAD with DOS 5.0 there is DOS5.TXT in DL6. There is also QINST.ZIP (or DOC, I don't remember) that discusses installing AutoCAD with QEMM. It has pointers that affect both real mode and pmode versions of AutoCAD. There is also a collection of memory questions and answers (primarily about read mode AutoCAD) called mem90.THD or something there abouts, also in DL6. In my opinion, there isn't alot to say about memory management if you have a reasonably average computer and a reasonably average application of AutoCAD when you're using pmode AutoCAD, and even less to say when you have a hot rod computer with any size drawings… There are those that like to diddle with this and that, but I can't see that there is enough performance increase to warrant the effort, even for multi-station applications. There should also be a document on running AutoCAD under Windows… (why anyone would want to do this, I have no idea…<g>). There hasn't been a thread collection posted of late because most of the questions are answered by DOS5.TXT or QINST.xxx. MEM90.THD covers 10c7 stuff pretty thoroughly. If, after you read this stuff, you have some questions, fire away. I'm not a benchmark guy, though… I trust my eyes and the way something 'feels'. You'll have to do some research to get into those areas… C#
