#Newest ARC Program

I used to be able to un-arc IBM files containg text and work with that text
without problems. As of late, many IBM arced files wonQw=d[ with my arc
program anymore. I get the "You need a newer version of ARC" error a lot now.
Whats the newest version of ARC for our Amiga? Thanks,

Sounds like your getting bit by the "when is an ARC file not an ARC file"
that spurred a lawsuit in the MessyDOS world. The arc file you have was
probably created with PKArc, rather than the "official" Arc program from SEA.
The Amiga ARC program is compatible with SEA's program, but now with the PKArc
program. Fortunately, there is an 'un-arcer' program for the Amiga by Phil
Katz that understands the PKarc formats – I think it's here in LIB 4, and is
called (this is going from memory, so I may be off a bit) PKXARC.ARC.

Thanks for that info. I'd heard rumors about some fights in the IBM arc world
but knew not what the fuss was about and didn't really care. Guess I'll get
that PKARC and add it to my collection of necessary files.

It's a (shareware) program for the Ami — it's been out for quite a while. I
don't use it myself, but from what I've heard, it is faster than ARC at
unarcing a file. It's biggest disadvantage is that it only unarcs files.
Since I create a lot of arc files, I need to keep the full ARC program around.
Never felt like having a second un-arcer only program hanging around – my
system is much too cluttered as it is.

I agree. What with including Arexx, TxED, ADOS 1.3, and assorted ados scripts
and arexx scripts, and additional libs, the wb disk I boot with is at 100%! I
am still in the process of modifying my df1: for lattice c bootup to include my
sundry utilities, as well as the libraries which I copy to ram: for speed.
So where would I put it? On another disk that will sit relatively unused. Oh
well.

I think the problem is that the Amiga "version" of ARC is showing its
AGE. The latest version we have was pretty current when it came out, but the PC
version has had several upgrades since then. Archive files created with those
NEWER versions (on a PC) will give the same "error" messages if one tries to
dissolve the archive with an older version of ARC (on a PC). So those NEWER
versions of ARC aren't compatable with the version WE have.
Your explination is probably also true.
