HELLO ALL,
I am new to this forum. My name is james lundy. I am a student at seneca
college and I have just completed my first autocad training course. I am
impressed with the autocad package. However, the cost of the package is
way beyond my budget. Can any of you suggest a cheaper alternative. I am
not an architect just a computer scientist.
James,
First of all, welcome to the forum! You'll find all sorts of interesting
people here and perhaps some good information as well! <grin>
Seriously, this is the place to be if you're "into AutoCAD."
Check with your college bookstore about a student version of AutoCAD. They
are priced (I think) below the $500 mark (less than $1000 fer sure). The
only disadvantages that I know of are that it is not upgradeable and has a
hardware lock to prevent unauthorized copying. If your school does not
carry the student version, you might want to give Autodesk Customer Service
a call. Someone else here on the forum might be able to help you as well.

Well…. welcome. Now, blind us with some science! <g>
In addition to the Student version of AutoCAD I would suggest Generic CADD
6.0 (list price $495, sold in places like Egghead and Software etc. for a
significant discount). We also offer a 60 day money back satisfaction
warranty.
The prior version won the PC Mag editors choice for best CADD program
under $1000, Infoworld Buyers Assurance Seal, and MS-DOS CADD Program of
the Year (1991) from Infoworld.
The new version (just released) offers multiple views, The ability to read
AutoCAD DWG files, DXF in/out, enhanced Macros (with variables, loops, flow
control, file i/o, etc) fillable fonts (for presentation quality text),
more hatch patterns, XMS memory support, and a host of other enhancements.
It's also supported here on CompuServe in the Autodesk Retail Products
forum (GO ARETAIL)
Also if you would like to get a feel for Generic CADD, you can download a
Non-saving demo of the prior version, CADD 5.0 (we are working on one for
CADD 6.0) from the ARETAIL software libraries.
