I just received my latest CDROM pack from DAK. The National Geographic
Mammals disk is great. Just one problem. I get different sound coming out
of each speaker. If I tell it to say "Monkey", I get "Monkey" from one
speaker and the name of a different animal from the other speaker. I called
your tech support and was told it was a defective disk. I don't think the
disk is defective. Is this a software problem or a limitation of my DAK BSR
drive?
Hi,
You need to call dak and get the updated sony drivers. The drivers
your using don't allow the drive to send out audio on only one channel. I
have the same system, and solved the problem that way. there is nothing
wrong with your disk.

If this is the BSR/Sony external CD-ROM drive then you just need version
2.2 of MSCDEX. I believe you'll find it in the database here.

Some CD-ROM drives cannot mut the audio from one channel while playing the
audio from the other channel. The hardware and the device drivers must be
able to mute either channel separately. Ideally, it should be able to
route either channel to both headphones (ie left->Left+Right,
Right->Left+right). But some drives cannot. Your options are: use a amp
which can feed either channel to both and slect it manually or make a
switch to let you do it. Most apps. use the left and right channels
separately to get more CD-DA sound on the disc, otherwise, they would need
a sound board to handle all audio as data. Comptons uses the channels as
left/right. With the first version, I got no sound at all, since it needed
a sound board. At least now, I get left and right channels separtely from
all my Hitachi drives which have audio. – Tom
