#Single Frame VTR RS232?

Gday Guys,
Can anyone out there give me at least a short list of single frame
VTR's that can be controlled from Soft VTR, without the need for a diaqest or
similar board?
We are after one (preferably SVHS or Hi-8), and the local distributers are next
to useless,

Michael – The EVO-9650 is perfect for RS-232 and already has a 3DS interface
provided by Greg and Gus, so its plug and play and very cost effective for this
type of VTR.

If you do not allready have Soft VTR think again.
Soft VTR controls a single machine only. so any rotoscoping must be
done on a single VTR. This hold true for the generally released version. There
are some versions for 3rd party RS422 cards that will control two decks.
For US$495.00 Animation Commander from Drastic Technologies, gives dual deck
support, extreme flexibility in configuration and some nice Windows apps as
well.
As for decks supported, and which is better, everybody here on the forum has an
opimion. I have used ( w/ SoftVTR & Ani Commander):
Sony EVO-9650 – HI8
Sony SVO-9??? Svhs- LTC time code only, +- $3500.00
Sony PVW-2800 Beta – Tricky to sync sometimes.
Sony BVW ? – Old workhorse
Sony VO-9850 – 3/4 Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
Panasonic AG-5700 (rs232) YES you can get single frames but there is a trick
and its not very good.
Panasonic AG-7750 SVHS – lots of them out there
Panasonic MII (forgot the number)
Sanyo GVRS-950 -SVHS – WAIT till after NAB, New release w/ TBC, real Sony
protocal, and some other fixes. I have laid down over 10000 frames, looks ok
for an inexpensive deck. Mine didn't drop a frame.
Best of all wait for MAX.

I guess that does complicate things a bit. In that case I'd look into the
frame accurate S-VHS decks from Sony and Sanyo. For just a little more than a
used Hi-8, you could get something brand new. Only twist is that you'd need
controlling software (I think).

Soft VTR controls decks by the RS422 interface, even though it is
going out your RS232 port. Just about every deck made it the past
five years or so and is controlled by a serial interface is RS422 and
controlable by the Soft VTR.
BTW, Soft VTR does not require another box, or board, just your
computer and the deck.
The short list would contain almost any Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Ampex
and BCT deck that is capable of recording and has a serial interface.
I'm currently using Sony's SVO-9600, a S-VHS machine I don't hear
about much in this forum. With 3D Studio and SoftVTR (my setup) it's
*very* cheap – maybe $3500 with the RS-422 & time code board.
PMJI – This one's for Micheal, but I use the SVO 9600 and love it.
It's a great machine for the price, and I like S-VHS better than Hi-8
because there are less dropouts.
The V-LAN EXPRESS is for users that will only require a single VTR
control. It is a self contained external device that connects a
computer serial port to any deck that the industry standard V-LAN
protocol supports (just about every one on the face of the planet).
EXPRESS functions as a V-LAN T and a V-LAN R in s single unit. The
cost is $795. It also supports VITC and/or LTC for decks that do not
have them built in. V-LAN drivers are supplied with 3DS and all
specific device drivers are included with the EXPRESS.
Have you looked at the Sony LVR-3000 & -5000 Laser Disc Recorder.
The picture quality is much higher than Hi-8 or SVHS and it is made
to record single frames. We use one with a simple batch file to do
our renders. It runs about $18,000 (Can) though.
