#3D Digitizr HyprSpce 150

I have a 3D Digitizer I would like to sell. It is a Mira Hyperspace 150. I
have only had it for 4 months. It is just like new. Currently it hooks up to
almost any Macintosh, but in a few weeks it will also hook up to a PC. I only
want $8K for the entire system Which includes Modeling software a table on
which to set your object, the wand, and all the cables needed to hook it to a
Mac.

We'd always like another digitizer, but you need to come down in the
price. The Model 150 only lists for $8850, and Mira puts it on sale
for $7850 at every trade show. Last SigGraph they were going for
$7500 in the box. Not to mention Mira is charging an upgrade fee for
the PC interface.

I don't understand the question. I don't really need a digitizing unit
we're already using one. I was just responding to an ad listing one
for sale. If the price was right we'd be interested in a second one
for general use.
Typically we use a digitizing range of up to 60" cubed and accuracy
level of 0.03". Do you also have one you're looking to sell?
Nope – just interested in what 3D artists are looking for.

I'm definately not an expert on the systems, but as opposed to most of the
articles written on 3D Digitizing, I've actually used the systems enough to
formulate an opinion.
We've found that an overall resolution of 0.06" is fine for most models, the
exception being character or organic based models that benefit from the jump to
0.03". One major thing to watch out for in the 3D digitizer market is overall
system accuracy. There are alot of systems that claim a very high maximum
resolution like .001" but their actual "accurate" resolution is more like 0.1".
Most of the cheapo models list a maximum res at say 15" but don't list the
actual level of accuracy. One that comes to mind off the top of my head is
SAC's unit. It's extremely cheap and in addition to being very hard to use,
also offers high resolution with very low accuracy. Most people have enough
common sense to stay away from the unit when they see the repeated electrical
arc immenating<Sp> from the handle, but still others look at it as a quick
cheap fix to digitizing.
IMHO the best bet for 3D digitizing of objects for animation is the Mira
Hyperspace 250. It list for 12,850 retail and has a phenomenal software
interface that will generate models into most software formats. It uses a
Polhemus Fastrak digitizer, with a max reolution of 0.003" at 15" from the
transmitter, and has a system accuracy of 0.03" (0.8mm).

They now have a Windows based system that is actually more robust than the Mac
system. They will shortly be releasing a new Mac version to integrate the new
features into.

That's good to know Paul, glad to see they're supporting the PC. And more
robust too! So the price you were quoting was for the Windows version, with the
digitizer and software? Not that I'm in the market but curious.

The price that I gave was the price for either the Windows or the Mac version.
They are priced the same. I have to also say that unless one is doing a large
amount of irregular shaped objects that are "extremely" hard to model through
conventional means, one should probably not spend the money on a digitizer. We
avoided getting one until we faced a project that would've taken months to
build inside a software based package.

I understand Paul, as I have been able to create 99% of my own collection. And
on occassion I have bought some models like a highly detailed globe, and model
cars and planes. But unless I was going to get into real high end modeling, I
don't think I'd have a use to justify the cost. And there are some good
modeling companies out there that I would use, should the need arise.

This helps me a lot! I've been looking into these for a while, and
might have tried one of the cheapo digitizers (I think I was looking
at the SAC at Siggraph last year). It's nice to hear from someone
really using them. I talked at length to the owner of MIRA when I was
at Siggraph and he demonstrated their MAC based unit – very
impressive. Of course, being a small shop, I was leery of the Mac. He
said the PC version would be out soon (and it looks like it's going
to happen soon) so I'm starting to think more seriously. Justifying
$10,000 is tough for me, tho. What's your main use of the Mira –
figurines, cars, characters, outside use? Do you sell meshes?
We don't sell meshes. We use the digitizer for complex organic-like
modelling that would take forever inside a software only modeller. I
have a great sculptor that works with/for us. He builds phenomenal
clay mock ups and then we digitize them. We also play with digitizing
other stuff, but it tends to be for personal enjoyment only.
I really wouldn't suggest spending the money on a unit unless you
really have a need for bizarre complex modelling. There are alot of
models that could be built infinitely faster inside a program like 3D
Studio, than trying to digitize them.
