#Cirrus Logic 5428

Hi all, I seem to remember someone asking about the 5428 and whether
Vibrant was supporting it with their newly released drivers. Does
anyone know if its supported, and if not what is for the VL bus in
the same price range? I can't find any 5426's or I'd go that route.
The STB Horizon VL is a cirrus 5426 card, I use it, and it is fairly efficient,
I would say it is probably one of the best in its price range, if not THE best.
Michael – I really like the Cirrus Chips too. Problem is knowing which
boards have them. I've tracked some more down. The Diamond Speedstar
Series are all Cirrus Logic. What's confusing is the Vibrant Support
for these different cards. Mostly I think because R3 and Vibrant got
caught between the ISA bus and VL bus transitions. And now the VL
cards are prolithic. I'd buy the 5428 as it is expandable to two Meg
but unless Vibrant comes out with a new Vibcfg that supports it I'm
concerned it won't work. Anyway thanks for the input.

Hi John,
I recently installed a Genoa 8500VL-xx and has worked well with the Vibrant
8500 drivers. The Mat editor takes advantage of the high color properly and
everything seems to work well. It's been in slave mode for the last two weeks,
so I couldn't say too much about rendering to the screen, or screen redraw
speeds. I basically got the computer, installed 3DS and Lantastic and started
it rendering.
There are a few models available: -10,-20 (CL-GD5426) -18,-28 (CL-GD5428).

David – So you think the 8500 driver will work with the GD5428? That would be
excellent if true. As its not much more for the 2 meg capability. And I think
I'm going to be working in the 800×600 resolution 24 bit as far as Windows is
concerned. Do you have the 5428 chipset?

I dare not go so far as to say what driver works with what other card,
but it certainly can't hurt to try it. Though I'm sure there's more
to a video card than its graphics processor.
The docs for the 8500 I HAD here said it contained either the 5426 or
5428. I didn't get a chance to pull the cover off the computer before
I sent it to our other office. (It was here on loan from the
division that makes the real money <g>). That machine came in from
UPS, got Lantastic & 3DS and within 2 hours of delivery was net
rendering an urgent project. I went to post production yesterday and
the computer went to its rightful owner :-(. The VL Bus seemed to
make a noticible difference in swap speed during rendering. I'm sorry
to see that system go.
Well David, you've made a great case for VL Mother boards if nothing
else. As far as the driver goes it does depend on the card in many
cases, as I've tried Sigma Design which have Cirrus Logic chips,
really fast by the way and they won't work with standard Cirrus
drivers in Windows. Which means they were specifically designed for
that card. But it does show what an optimized card can do with the
Cirrus Chips.
VL Busses with the appropriate IDE or SCSI should be faster when
swapping out. And graphic cards should run faster also. Sorry to
hear you lost your fast machine. I've had my new VL 66 and VL
graphics card 24 hours already and have been so busy its not set up
yet. After I post these messages though I am it, and I'll let you
know. I've got a VL SCSI on order, which will really show how much
difference the VL design makes on swap files, althoug I have enough
memory that this really shouldn't occur.

Sorry for this <BG>, but no they're not! The Speedstar, Speedstar Hi-Color,
and Speedstar 24 are ET4000 based. The Speedstar 24X is Western Digital based,
and only the Speedstar Pro VLB is Cirrus Based.
Just trying to clarify, as I have owned each of these boards!

Well Chuck, I really appreciate the clarification, and I'll be d*mned! I've had
three different places tell me they where, but fortuneately I've got the right
one on order. (I just hate when that happens. <g>) Jeez I hope the Vibrant
driver is the right one. It says Speedstar Pro, so I assume its VLB.

I have installed three Speedstar Pro's (they are only VLB) with the Vibrant
drivers and no problems so far!

I just got my VL Motherboard and Speedstar Pro and it is a 5428 Cirrus chip!
Funny Vibrant didn't include it as a generic driver for Cirrus.

Well John, if nothing else, I understand that all the dual series
chips are compatible, i.e. the 5424 is compatible with 5422, 5428 and
5426, so you could use the 5426 driver with the 5428 chip. May not
get ALL the benefit of the 5428 chip, although I think the real
difference is in the memory addressable by the chip.
Mike, as there really isn't more that I need from the driver than what the 5426
chip offers that would be fine. I'll look into it. Thanks.

John, we agree on this Cirrus Logic thing. I just recently did the
benchmark tests on the Liquid Speed and the Cirrus Logic 5426 was a
real winner. I do have one board with a 5426 that supports 2 meg. I
installed it using the Vibcfg.
Yeah Don, people wonder why I'm hot on the Cirrus Chips and its because its
fast in 3DS. Obviously if you're into Windows you have other requirements, but
I really like the Cirrus for 3DS.
