To anyone and everyone, I am attempting to retrieve a series of
messages I sent and received in November 1993. I have attempted to
use all available choices for number of days, starting date, starting
message #, etc, Nothing! Nada!! Where do these things go? To Greg
Pyros's circular file?? The Ether??? How can I get these bloody
things????

I spent far too much time on the ACAD forum when I was more active in CAD than
graphics and animation. Sorry, you'll have to get those yourself! <g>
There are a few regulars here who save everything, Gus is another of them.

The correct answer is…. b) The Ether!!!
There is no gigantic accumulating file of forum messages; they scroll
off when their number is up. The forum can only hold so many messages
at once, and the most recent one posted bumps the oldest one off.
The scroll rate on this forum is about a week, to the best of my
knowledge. The only way a message from longer ago than that would be
saved was if someone had saved it. Some folks will save threads of
interest and upload them, so that's your best bet.
Try posting a query with the relevant subject header and any message numbers
and you may get lucky.

Did you set your high message number way down? This prevents you from seeing
anything prior to the high mess. #.

Thanks for the thought. I set it WAAAAAY down. I'm now told that if you're
lucky, you might get a message from two weeks ago. I guess the circular file
kicks in once the buffer gets full. thanks anyway.

There was a message here from the SYSOP a day or so back that said the
"rollover" time on the ASOFT forum is down to about a week.

Thanks for the info. Naturally, I stupidly assumed that there was some giant
repository of ancient messages somewhere out in Nebraska. I guess the message
is get 'em while they're hot?

There is a big repository of ancient messages from the ASOFT board, but it
ain't somewhere out in Nebraska…………<grin>.
Unfortunately it ain't very searchable right now either as it consists of many
megs of archived files on a series of 44 meg bernoulli disks. Maybe one of
these days I can get it all together and in order. Then maybe we can put it on
CD-ROM along with the ACAD forum. (wonder if Autodesk has a budget for this
????)

What a concept….600 megs of messages. I'm almost embarrassed to say this,
but I would probably actually read the entire lot. What if it were released on
a CD? Is there some kind of category on Billboard Top 10 for this? Imagine
people asking for these in the store…."Do you have the 1992 Racing Forum CD?
Jeeeeeez.
By the way, I certainly was not making now, nor have I ever poked fun at
anything Nebraskan. (with the one possible exception of their seeming inability
to emerge triumphant in bowl games). Since no one ever seems to ask, it would
interest me to know a couple of factoids; when was the ASOFT forum started? How
many messages are received each week (day, month, whatever) Does the SYSOP
actually have to read and or edit each and every one of these? Are there
really COMPUSERVE POLICE? From how many countries have messages been received?
If you took all the "threads" and put them together, would you make a soft
quilt?

with 3DS r3, any ideas greatly appreciated.
Why don't you give Abekas a call. I don't have the number handy right now, but
I'll post it tommorrow if you need it. It should be listed in the manuals,
though.

We have now received the A-66 yet, but it's definitely coming. (like trying to
hold back the tide). As soon as I get any info, or vice-versa, I'll be in
touch.

I really don't think you need to be so worried about the Abekas. You're best
bet, I think, is to keep close contact with Abekas. You can contact Ed Brault
at (415) 369-5111. He's the guy who answeres questions <g>.

Based on my experience, and that of the folks I deal with who have Abekas'
video equipment, these folks are VERY professional, very helpful, and very
knowledgable. It's a different world from SOME of the PC sheisters out there (I
wouldn't consider Truevision "sheisters" by any stretch of the imagination,
though perhaps less than responsive on occasion). I'm incredibly jealous that
you guys are getting one of these for your very own, since it's about my
favorite peice of video equipment I've EVER used! Oh well, someday…

Yeah, I generally save everything I deem as "useable" – made the mistake of
printing out my message file the other day – 300 pages. <g>

I tried the print out method — ie editing out non-essential stuff
then printing using a util that puts 2 pages on 1 Lastjet sheet, but
it's too had to find info later. At least, when it's still in file
format, you can do searches (with, like, Vernon Buerg's List
utility).

PMJI, but LIST is great – extremely fast, compact, full of features:
list files by wildcard, view binary files in hex, editor support,
etc. – I've been using it for years. It's a shareware program,
available on CIS, but I don't know where. To get you started (until
you find the latest on CIS), I've taken the liberty to send it to you
– check your email. I can't seem to find the docs, however, so you
might want to find and download the package to get the most out of
it. It's real easy to use: type LIST FILENAME. To use the wildcards,
type LIST FILE*.* or somesuch and use CTRL-PgDN and CTRL-PgUp to
switch between files. Press F for a non-case-sensitive search. Press
A to search again forward, F9 to search again backward.
As far as searching files, I generally use the old DOS Norton
FileFind. It can search megabytes of messages in just a few seconds,
building a list of all the files that contain a given string. You
simply pick a file to view from the list and the text pops up; press
a key and move to the next occurance and/or the next file.
BTW, I too want to say how much I like your AniPro stuff – the color cycling
stuff is amazing!
