I have NO trouble with the prices on their 68020/68881 boards. But what would YOU think of a list price of $3995 for TWO MEG of 32 bit RAM? *THAT* is my "complaint" about their price. No doubt they produce a quality product. BUT that RAM price is WAY out of line, IMHO.

I think that those who really care about such things (price/power ratios) are going to be looking at Sun Micro pretty soon. By the time you trick out an Amiga 2000 enough to do anything at all, you've entered a price range where it might pay to look at other machines. Unix is almost a neccessity. You can even get 386's to be very competitive. I think CBM is castrating a machine with genuine potential. Too bad. J.K.

Yes, but even low powered suns (with disks+shoeboxes) start at around 10,000-15,000. With amiga's running unix possibly going at 7500, and then being discounted, I think there should be quite a good market for them as well. sdb

IF the Commodore 68020/68881 card comes in at about $2000, that would put an Amiga machine at about $3500-4000, not including HD's, extra floppys or monitor. The current software base would run much better, without even considering what Unix with XWindows would add. Since "castration" generally means taking something very important (!) away, how would offering a 68020/68881/MMU card for the Amiga even be considered in that category? Seems more like HORMONE SHOTS to me. After all, you don't NEED to buy the add-ons, if you don't need the extra power. Lloyd

Speaking of castration, and the CBM 68020/68881 card; They're not going to release it in the US. Castration is an appropriate term, I think. –Ben–

I *think* your info *might* be wrong on that one. Last week in the Wall Street Journal (I've heard, will check on monday) it was reported that Commodore intends to ship the 2500 series computers in Sept or Oct – to Europe and the US. It has the 68020 in it. If it isn't much more than the A2000 with the 68020 board in it, it wouldn't make too much sense NOT to sell the pieces seperately.

Recent posting on UseNET refutes your information about not releasing the 68020/68881 (along with WSJ article mentioned by Lloyd). A summary of what the UseNET posting said was that, 'the story is untrue, the A2620 will be released in the US, the person responsible for that rumor has been identifed and appropriate action taken' This message was from someone at CBM, but I forget who exactly.
