I was wondering if anyone could suggest to use the best way to use FRACTINT to creat fractal scenes. I have tried using fractal images as bump maps, but I have not been satisfied withe the results. Thanks SSH –Graphic Realities–

I guess the best use I can think of for Fractint is to use the plasma algorithm and do a gifdxf to the saved gif file to create a 3d terrain model. Great for quickie, realistic landscapes for 3DS. You have to map it, unless you want to use the neon looking colors fractint generates as a fantasy landscape kind of thing.

Have you looked at the new Vistapro? I got the Vistapro 3.1 – CD-ROM and it lets you turn its images into DXF files which 3DS will convert into .3DS meshes. You can also make a texture map of its terrain ( I was'nt too impressed with that) or you can use your own texture maps. It is really great for integrating landscape into 3DS Judy

I haven't checked out the newest Vistapro, but did try the last one's demo. It was very cool. If I were doing landscapes more often (games or artichoke visualizatons <g>) I'd run out and buy it. I'm holding off untill I get a job that requires such features, because otherwise I get carried away and buy too much stuff <g>. John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

<< I get carried away and buy too much stuff <g>>> I know what you mean, it's tough having to work on a limited budget. Thanks SSH –Graphic Realities–

Is Vistapro a DOS or Windoze application, and what is the cost. Thanks SSH –Graphic Realities–

The new Vistapro is $150.00 and it is DOS only. Judy

I agree, the exporting of texture maps is pretty weak, but there is a way that works really well: Have you tried rendering the texture map, by moving the camera above the landscape, and rendering out to a really high res. picture. I've gotten it to look really good. In the manual, it describes, this. Just look under the texture map section.

Not meaning to knock Fractint, but for fractal scenes you HAVE to take a look at Vistapro! I (naturally) was a complete skeptic untill I saw what could be done – fairly amazing stuff. – Phil

Who puts out Vistapro? What is the List price? What are it's other features? JP

Jim: VistaPro 3.1 was written by John Hinkley and is published by Virtual Reality Labs, Inc. There is a 3.0 features list (VP3PCF.TXT) over in the VRLI library (section 15 of GraphAVend) (GO VRLI) with the main new feature in 3.1 being the ability to export landscapes as DXF files. There is a demo version of VistaPro 3.0 in the library as well (VP3DMO.EXE) and a sample animation (VPANIM.EXE). John frequents this forum as well as the VRLI section of GraphAVend so he's likely to reply to your message as well. Clint <VRLI>
