Power Windows

Many moons ago, there was a product called Power Windows, which made it
a snap to design screens and windows for Amiga programs. Is this program
ever going to be updated?

Sorry, but there are no current plans to update PowerWindows. Surely there is
something workable in the PD by now for this?

Too bad. While pd programs are handy, and sometimes quite handy,
commercial products are almost always more reliable.

Commercial programs are almost always more reliable? Surely you jest. I
know many shareware and PD authors who put many commercial ventures to
shame.
Pick a topic and I'll show you a better non-commercial version, docs
included.

As a general rule, commercial products are more reliable, if for no other
reason that the implied merchantablity requirement that allows you to
demand your money back if you buy something and it is not as advertised.
Also, in general, commercial products come with at least some usuable
documentation (Microsoft to the contrary). When will upgrades be made.
With commercial software, most (selling) products are upgraded on a fairly
regular basis. PD when the author gets a chance. Finally, most companies
of any size provide some after sale support. There was a thread over on
the user forum some time ago where someone asked about accounting software
to use in his business. I made the comment "would you want to trust your
business to PD software?". Of course there are bad companies too, and
some good ones go under.
I am not saying that PD software is bad. There are many useful utilities
out there. But if a company wants to stay in business, it _must_ produce
a product that is better and easier to use that PD software. Otherwise,
why buy it. Perhaps that is why no one has written commercial software
that compeats with LEX (flex from gnu) or YACC (bison). It is damned hard
to improve on the free versions available.
Incidently, if you know of a PD program similar to Power Windows, what is
it?

You might look at MUI, it's available here in Amigatech.

I did a search for MUI through the Amigatech catalogs. I couldn't find
anything.

Well, This was just announced:

Title : MUI v2.0 USER archive
Keywords: MUI MAGIC USER GADGETS STUNTZ
MUI – MagicUserInterface v2.0 shareware USER archive is an object
oriented system to create and maintain graphical user interfaces. From
a programmers point of view, using MUI saves a lot of time and makes
life much easier. Thinking about complicated terms like window resizing
or font sensitivity is simply not neccesary. This distribution is
interesting for both, users and programmers. Please have a look at the
supplied demo programs and at the documentation to see what MUI has to
offer. Stuntz
