#PD X Windows port?
14 messages in this thread
I seem to remember hearing a long time ago that someone was working on a
public-domain port of X Windows to the Amiga. Has anyone heard any news of it
since then?
It's called DaggeX or something like that. I haven't tried it. I hear
that it's slowwwwww. What are you thinking about using X for? I have
difficulty imagining an application for X that doesn't justify what
GfxBase charges for their excellent product.

I was going to take a shot at porting FractInt, and I figured that it would be
easiest to get X for the Amiga and port from the X version, as opposed to
trying to translate X calls into Intuition calls (since I don't know a whole
lot about X) or porting from the presumably hardware-bashing IBM version.
FractInt, if you don't know, is a huge fractal generator written by a bunch of
Compuserve users. It's pretty much the program to end all programs, but nobody
has ever produced an Amiga version and nobody has ever seemed interested in
tackling it. I figured I'd try if there was an easy way out. Since it's
freeware, I don't think GfxBase is the way to go.
It's not that bad to translate X calls into Intuition calls, and you'll
get much better performance that way.
Randell Jesup did it for netrek. I think he's released that source, which
probably includes quite a few translated X calls you could rip out and
use.

Netrek? tell me more…
2 teams, up to 8 players to a team. Each player at his or her own
workstation, all connected with highspeed links. The screens (about
1000×800) display a tactical map, strategic map, message window,
statistics, etc. Each player controls a starship which can battle
(kinda like spacewar) in the tactical map. There are phasers,
photons, sheilds, plasmas, cloaking devices, tractor/repulsor beams,
etc. There are many ship types with different armorment, speed,
energy, etc.
When you aren't blowing up something, you are running around between
planets, bombing enemy planets and grabbing armies from friendly
planets to drop on razed enemy planets. Drop enough armies and it
becomes a friendly planet. Enemy planets defend themselves,
friendlies repair and refuel you. It's a blast. We used to have a
weekly game at C=.
Has anyone tried the X11 demo from GfxBase. I downloaded the x11dem.lha file
but can't get it to run without complaining 'cannot connect to'
Connect to what I've no idea.
I have run Dale's X, but I haven't run his demo. X is not simple. I
would assume that it comes with quite a bit of documentation, as well
as phone numbers and email addresses. Are you sure that you want to
run X anyway?
Unfortunately, it came with no documentation, phone numbers, email
addresses, or even map coordinates. It's not particularly that I want
to run X, it's just that after having downloaded 1.3Mb, I would
really like o get something out of it! [D [D [D [D [D [D [D [D [D [D

Sorry about that last message – the right finger got carried away.
After having used X on the Unix boxes at work, I was interested in
seeing the implementation on the Amiga. Never mind – I'll stick with
intuition.
Is the Amiga version of NeTrek here on CIS ??
No. You must have AS225r2 and several Amigas (or Suns) on your network to
make use of it. 1000×800 displays are almost necessary as well.
It's FTP'able from somewhere, complete with sources.
You could always email jesup@cbmvax.commodore.com to ask where to FTP it
from.

Sorry for my ignorance but what is Netrek?
Ottmar Roehrig from Hamburg, Germany
A cool game played over a network.
