I have a 286 BridgeBoard. Is there anyway I can run one little Windows program to send two little commands? –Paul < Motorola Inside >

I believe that Windows runs even on a meager 286, but you'll probably be better off running Windows 3.0 rather than 3.1. Also if you use Windows 3.1 be aware that the CGA display drivers are not built in (last I checked) For that you'll have to contact MS and download the CGA drivers. Catya,

Thanks Clarence, I'll give it a stab, 3.0. –Paul < Motorola Inside >

Paul, That would depend alot on the program. You can run Windows 3.0 and windows 3.1 in "protected mode" I think. Basically, this means that you won't have access to the higher level memory functions. Programs like WordPerfect won't run in that mode. How much RAM do you have? You'll be lucky if you can run any thing with under 4 Megs in Windows 3.1. Matt

I'm not sure about a '286 being able to run Windows 3.1, but Windows will run in 2 meg of ram. (Extremely slow, but it'll run.) Bob Comer — Flying high and fast with my A1200HD'030 on Autopilot! From Cheyenne, Wyoming U.S.A.

you can run windows on a 286, though it will be rather slow and you will only be able to run one major program (such as Word, and that was version 2.0, i do not know about the latest one) at a time unless you are willing to sit through some very intensive disk swapping. windows will even run on a 286 with 1 meg of ram. 🙂 i do not know why i tried it, but it did work. 🙂 bob

I just received my CGA drivers from MS. Just call their support # & they send them at no charge. It took about a week for them to arrive. I hope to see more here regarding Windows as I am being FORCED to running it to support most of the better CDROM software on my 386SX BB and NEC74-1 drive.

Run it in "real" mode–there's a bug in the 286 BB that doesn't like Protected mode. But you should be able to run it minimally, even with 1 meg. (maybe) Marion CROSSINGS Newsletter for Amiga/pc/Mac compatibiliy
