#last-image file
13 messages in this thread
All of a sudden I'm getting an "unable to create last-image file"
whenever I render something. Everything else works fine and I wasn't
getting this message before today. I'm just learning 3DS, plodding
through the tutorials, so I'm clueless as to what happened. Can
anyone help? Thanks in advance,
How much disk space do you have left?
BTW, have fun with the tutorials. They're definitely the best way to get a
handle on this incredible software.

"How much disk space do you have left?" 125megs so that ought not be
the problem. Curiously, it seems to happen only when I load meshes or
flics from Nancy Fulton's 3D Applied book. But when it does happen it
won't render *any* last image, even one not from the book. If I close
3DS and reopen it, it works fine. Curious and curiouser.
Anyway, thanks for the thought. And I agree; I've never touched
software that comes anywhere close to the power of 3DS (and I'm just
scratching the surface).

Sounds suspiciously like the parameters for "last rendered image" is perhaps
changed when loading Nancy's files. Are they .prj files? I don't have the
book, so I don't really know, but that's my suspicion.
I still feel like I'm scratching the surface of 3DS, too. Every night when I'm
about to go to bed I think of some experiment to try, or a new model to start
on, and there goes the night. I'm getting paler and paler every day <g>.

John:
They are .prj files. Does that make a difference? No CD ROM (yet!) so I copied
them to floppies & from there to my HD. Anyway, her tutorials are worth this
(very) minor annoyance.
Since I have an unrelated "day job" the only chance I get to work on
it is at night. Like you, I find it very hard to go to bed without
trying out "one more variation" or "one more combination". I even
find it hard to look at something in "real life" now without paying
particular attention to how the light hits the object, the shadow
created, and how I could recreate it. I've even dusted off my dreaded
anatomy texts (I'm a physician) looking for clues to create more
realistic human movement. Needless to say, my wife thinks I'm nuts. I
just wish I were certain she's wrong <g>.
Anyway, hopefully I'll progress far enough along the curve to where I
can post an "intelligent" question.

Are you out of or low on disk space?
JKJ:
"Are you out of or low on disk space?" 125 megs left but thanks for the
thought.

Another thought: have you changed the 3DS.SET parameter from the default
LAST-IMAGE-FILE = "lastrend.img" ?
The set file says it defaults to "the 3DS origin directory". Could
it be trying to write the last image to the CD-ROM? I just tried
loading a mesh from a CD, turning on SaveLast, and rendering: It
worked OK. If you list your exact steps to produce this, I'll try
the same and let you know what happens here.
PMJI:
John: I got a commitment for the 18th, 19th and 20th in Orlando so I won't be
able to make the Manatee hunt.
I guess we'll see you at Comdex.
Don
JKJ:
Lacking a CD ROM I copied the files used for the 3DS Applied tutorials on to
floppies and from there into the appropriate subdirectories. These are project
files (*.prj). Does that make a difference? Whenever I leave 3DS to look at
3D.set all is as it should be but of course, if I leave 3DS & then restart it,
all works fine again (until I load one of the *.prj files). Anyway, a very
minor (but odd) annoyance. I wish I could say it was the worst I've ever seen
my computer behave.
Andrew
sounds like somebody turned off the save last rendered image button to
me
Richard:
Good thought. I had forgotten such a button existed. But I checked and
the save last image button is still on. See my response to John T.
though for how oddly it seems to behave.

Check your 3ds.set file for where the last-image file is saved. I believe you
can specify drive:\path\filename.ext. It's possible a non-existent directory
was specified.
