Well, there's another one of THOSE LETTERS in the current Keyboard mag. I'm
drafting a reply, but one of the allegations is new to me–this gentleman
says here that "Amiga World magazine is being entirely underwritten by
Commodore, in contrast to the many genuine Atari magazines like Antic." I
know, I know, it sounds outrageous, but I thought I'd make sure so I don't
embarass myself too much. I mean, maybe the cost of one of those back covers
is enough to run Amiga World for two months, hm? The rest of the missive has
all the usual stuff about how the Amiga's CPU can't get at the bus because
the graphics chips hog it and multitasking is available on the ST and all
kinds of other cool things for the ST will be out very very soon… Whattaya
think of the bone-chilling truth about Amiga World's financial backing, eh?

The rumor of CBM underwriting AW was quite strong a few months ago. I
thought I'd even heard confirmation — but the deal was something where CBM
guaranteed profitability on the magazine, or something like that, for the
first few issues. Apparently CW Communications offered the same deal to CBM
and Atari, and only CBM went for it. Remember, I'm talking from rumors here.
I'm not sure how you'd follow up on the lead. Both parties will surely tell
you to go away, whether or not it's true… – Bela

AmigaWorld is quoted as saying, "AMIGA WORLD MAGAZINE is doing very well. We
sell out of 100,000 issues per run. As a matter of fact, we will most likely

AmigaWorld was (and may still be) totally underwritten by CBM.
AmigaWorld was underwritten in some form by CBM – the Columbia Journalism
Review reported that last summer. I don't remember which issue. I asked an
editor at AW about this once, and he said they had enough money, and I know
they are planning the December and January issues already. They work so far in
advance! BTW, Amazing Computing's sole funding was Don Hicks' mortgage on his
house. How's that for dedication? The magazine is doing well. The issue
after the COMDEX issue (that's August cover) will be four-color cover, if all
goes well. Hopefully, it will expand past 64 pages, and jump to eighty pages
soon. Maybe the July issue, if we can write enough about COMDEX.
AmigaWorld is such a piece of trash – I am not proud to admit that I have a
subscription. I would really like to see Amazing Computing become as well
known as BYTE, and blow AM back to whatever planet it came from!
Marlene, I have to say one thing about AmigaWorld. I recieved a cancelation
notice from them, because they thought I did not pay for the subscription yet.
I have a cancelled check proving that I did. But I am not even going to go to
the trouble of fighting with them about it. I won't miss much!

Speaking of Byte, the last thing Mr. Pournelle said to me, after I gave him
copies of Amazing Computing, was "Hm. Let's see if we can't double your
circulation." Move over, Byte! At the show, I met a lot of Atari publishing
people, too – like the publisher of Antic. Even though this guy publishes a
half-dozen Atari and Apple mags now, a friend reminded me that he started in
his basement five or so years ago, just like Don Hicks. And Hank Schilling,
for that matter. Has anyone else received that brochure on that new Amiga
magazine, Envision? Expensive critter – $80 a year – and that gives you
quarterly issues, with 8 x 10 color glossies, and a disk, and a cassette tape.
Wow. And we thought AmigaWorld had a surplus of "creative" energies. Sounds
like a real coffee-table mag.

on the cassette anyway? New Wave Music produced on the Amiga? —–Jim

native Amiga sound and MIDI.
The funniest thing about shows like COMDEX is that a computer manufacturer can
set up $10,000 worth of MIDI synths and sound equipment, and drive it all with
a dinky computer and a MIDI interface, and many people will attribute the great
sound to the dinky computer. At COMDEX, the Atari booth had at least $10,000
of audio gear (six-foot speakers,a Yamaha TR rack mount, (fully loaded with the
equivalent of 8 DX-7s), a separate DX-7, a Juno I think, a drum box, and a
Sleazy 101…) and people were saying "Boy, that ST has really great sound."
Sheesh.

Concur! Any magazine with Margaret Marabito on the staff should be
avoided…her bowing and scraping before the alter of the CBM Plus-4 was
extreme embarrasing…Kono hito totemo warui desu!

MacWorld was also started by Apple, it the mark of a respectable hardware
manufactuer … spending $$$ to make sure users get a GREAT magazine. Totally
professional.

Well that's reality for ya…it sounds like it's getting big enough to wean,
though. Editor Wright says they'll probably show a profit in '86, which is
unusual for a magazine as new as Amigaworld.
I like the 'slickness' of AmigaWorld — but content is another matter! The
first 2 issues of Amazing Computing had more info than all issues of AmigaWorld
has had!
