#MS-DOS on 3.5"

I need to copy Amiga data files to MS-DOS on 3.5" disks. PCCopy only wants to
see a 5.25" disk drive. Is there some way to do this without Transformer? Can
it be done even with Transformer? Thanx! —Mike

Dos2Dos is from Central Coast Software, and allows copying files between
Amigados disks and IBM disks. Also available from them is Disk2Disk, which
allows copying 1541/1571 disks. (C64/C128 disks)

yes, it's easy with Transformer. You first copy to 5.25" disks via the
PCCopy routine, and then boot up MS-DOS via Transformer and copy from the 5.25
onto a 3.5" disk and it will work just fine. I do it all the time and even
thou it's a pain…sometimes it's necessary.
I don't know of a reasonable way to do it directly via PCCopy as the
3.5" drives are recognized by DOS as AmigaDOS disks without a mount command and
thus are not useable as MS-DOS type disks…I suppose if you wanted to plug an
external 3.5" in while the system was "hot" (NOT a good idea thou!) it might
work…but you are really tempting fate and could easily blow the computer
trying it.

Since there is nothing stopping you from MOUNTing an already mounted drive
(you have to use a different name), is it possible to mount, say, DF1: as an
MSDos disk?

Yes, once a drive is mounted…either via the mount command or via the
auto config, it can't be used as an MS-DOS disk via PCCopy…that is unless you
had a device driver (like trackdisk.device) that recognized it as an MS-DOS
styled disk…then it would indeed be possible.

I must be missing something here. The 5 1/4" drive needs to be MOUNTed, and I
gather it needs a driver to be recognized as an IBM style drive. What's
preventing you from MOUNTing a 3.5 the same way?

You are missing something…you do NOT mount the 5.25" drive to use it
via the PCUtilities or even Transformer for that matter. If you mount the
5.25" drive…you can NOT use PCUtilities with it.

5.25" drive…you can NOT use PCUtilities with it.
