#GPFax problem!
11 messages in this thread
I just installed GPFax, but it refuses to recognize the modem. I've
got a 1200 and a USRobotics Sportster 14.4 fax/modem. When GPFax
starts the TR light on the modem goes on, but the software just
doesn't get it.
I have no problems with AutoPilot or VLT, though. And the modem is
on, I tried both my serial cable and the cable that came with GPFax,
no go. One thing – the package says that it's the Supra version,
should that make any difference?
Paul
The Supra version is just that, the Supra version. It is also only for
Class 2 modems of which the Sportster is not. You need to buy an original
copy of GPFax. Do you already own a Supra?

Huh. Thanks for the info. What is the Sportster – I thought all
reasonably good fax-modems were more or less the same.
Paul
No. There are two classes of fax modems (1 and 2). They are equivalent
from the user's point of view, but not from the programmer's point of
view.

What do you mean equivalent? Can they connect to each other? Are they
equally fast or slow? Was I stupid buying what turns out to be a Class 1
fax/modem?

You may want to check to see if it _really_ is the Supra version.
I have a ZyXEL modem. I wanted to use the GPFax software, but the
software on my local vendor's shelf read "GPFax Software Developed by
GP Software, Australia SupraFAXModem". I asked the vendor if they
would have the non-Supra software available. He opened the package,
looked at the first page of the manual, and declared it generic.
Apparently you can't tell the software by the cover of the manual. The
cover read SupraFAXModem. The first page read "for Amiga computers and
TR29-Class 2 compatible Fax Modems".

That's the rub – I've got a Class 1 fax/modem, so it doesn't matter. Do
any versions of GPFax support Class 1?
Paul
Yes.

Ernie,
When I bought my GPFax package (I told my dealer I wanted the Supra
version) I got the 2.23 Generic Class 2 version. It worked on my SFM.
Later I contacted GP Software and crossgraded it to the SUPRA version. If
your ZYXEL is Class 2 you can use it.
