#MPEGII
12 messages in this thread
I was looking for a card to do MPEGII compression/expansion with
capture/playback video and sound for IBM compatibles. Vince Pilgrim in
the Graphics Vendors A forum said to ask Jerry Hatchett in this forum
but I don't know his ID. If there is a card, I suppose it has an
Amiga counterpart or he wouldn't have sent me here. I read that a
company called Xilinx or something similar had one in beta. Any one
familiar with the company that could give me a phone number. Thanks
Barry,
Here I am, but unfortunately know zero about MPEG cards…
Sorry,
Jerry
Well glad to meet you; if you learn anything of interest I'm all ears.
Jerry, appologies for that misdirect on the MPEG card. Guess I missed that one
<grin>.
For Berry, I noted an advert in the latest Desk Top Video World magazine on
this item from a company called Xingit with a voice number of (800) 2-XINGIT (I
just hate it when they do that) and a "normal" FAX number of (805) 473-0147.
If you get the February issue, it is on page 24 (this isn't intended as an
advert, gang). Sorry for not having this info readily available when you
posted in the vendor forum, but I had not gotten the latest DTVW rag at that
time <grin>. This may or may not be what you are looking for, but it may be a
starting point.
Thanks for letting me use a reply to you to shoot that note to Berry and,
again, applogies for that misdirect on this.
Vince
Vince,
No problem on the misdirect. Speaking of DTVW, I found the latest issue to be
quite sad, both in physical appearance and content…
Jerry
Jerry, I've noticed that a number of the ones that I usually get have been kind
of dropping in content and advertising. Wonder if there is a "new year" slump
going on. There wasn't as much there as has been in the past, but I have faith
that it will pick up again <grin>.
Oh yes! I sent another one over here, although not pointed to you, who had
some questions on doing some production work with his computer. Seems like I
am seeing more and more related stuff showing up for PC and MAC platforms than
ever before. Wonder if we will see a "Toaster In A Window" some day <grin>.
Guess the general public is getting interested in doing fancy stuff on their
home videos now.
Vince
Vince,
The latest issue of DTVW makes one wonder if they were ready to go monthly…
Jerry
Jerry, now that you mention it, I hadn't even noticed that it went to a
monthly. Well, maybe times will get better for them since they have had some
really good stuff in the past. I'd kind like to see some really good open and
honest discussions on the merits and pitfalls of the various formats currently
in use. Maybe something like U-Matic SP vs BetaCam vs one inch "C" for the
hard core editing jobs using real world source material rather than test
frames. As you know, the test frames tell a lot, but leave a lot to be desired
in a true evaluation of any system since they won't be what the customer gets.
Had I had the opportunity to see those Panasonic S-VHS machines in action, I
would have saved a bundle on that fiasco. I just hate those "performance check
reports" where someone sticks a MB through a machine and states how much better
it is with a 425 line resolution than format X with "only 320 lines". Shame is
that a lot of potential customers really have no idea of how much really is
involved in getting a good quality signal off the tape. A lot more than a
monochrome MB signal will hit that circuitry and how it holds up in a real
world environment is a lot more telling of a particular format or system than
scads of controlled condition tests. (Personal opinion only, here.)
Vince
AMEN, Vince! What matters is what the end product, usually VHS, looks like to
the customer. All else is virtually irrelevant, IMHO. I did go ahead and take
the UVW plunge a few days ago, and am proud to say that Betacam SP dubs to VHS
very nicely…
Jerry
Jerry, on your "Betacam SP dubs to VHS very nicely", I sure hope it will do
more than that <grin>. Been looking seriously at it here too, but will
probably hold off for a while. Any pointers on things to look out for? I am
looking for another ten thousand miles out of the U-Matic SP machines first
<LOL>.
Vince
Vince,
Due to inclement weather, I've barely gotten to play with the new UVW decks at
all… 🙁
The main reason I went ahead and took the plunge was because I had a couple of
clients specify Betacam SP be used on their jobs, and I was looking at spending
a lot of bucks just to rent gear and have nothing when it was done.
I'll post my findings on the UVW's as I go, if you or anyone else is
interested…
Jerry
Jerry, on your "I'll post my findings on the UVW's as I go, if you or anyone
else is interested", would be quite interested in knowing how they perform in
real world service. Thanks for any and all information you can provide. This
may be the best way to get the real story on how equipment performs rather than
attempting to rely on the generic lab tests that are generally provided within
the publications.
