I have TOPS on my little network (Mac Plus, Mac SE, LaserWriter Plus) but it
was not being used while I made the tests. (I do understand it's not entirely
passive, but in any event, I was using the scanner connected to the SE and
printing on the LW without moving any files via TOPS; neither Mac was published
for the other.)
It seems more likely to me that the scanners and/or software make different
sorts of TIFF files and that XPress doesn't recognize all of them (even though
PageMaker does, apparently).
I think you're right…and will be calling Microtek's tech people tomorrow!
Your fax arrived ok today – thanks a million. I'm including it in a package
I'm sending Fed Ex to both Quark and Microtek. We'll get this thing figured
out one way or another!!
Oh, good. Please let me know what's going on so I can consider it myself. It
was interesting that the Dest scan had trouble while the AppleScan did not.
XPress also seemed not to recognize that the AppleScan was line art; it
presented me with the tone controls that are meant for halftones. PageMaker
was not confused; if you look closely at the two pages, you'll see that the
AppleScan image is crisp in PageMaker, weak in XPress.
I couldn't see the difference in the fax, but that's interesting to know. More
and more I'm operating on the assumption that the problem is TOPS. Is there
anyway you can upgrade to 2.1 and see if you still have the problem? I don't
think there's any charge for the upgrade, and the people at TOPS recommend it
for using Quark.
