Does anyone know how to take 2D text created directly in the 3D editor and bend
it around a circle? I have a globe that is spinning and I want to write some
words that follow a perfectly circular arc from the left side of the globe to
the right, across the top. The words will look like a rainbow when done, not
the the Universal Studios logo, wrapping around the globe. Does this make
sense? Can anyone help? It seems like this should be an easy task but it eludes
me…
I use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Type Align for that kind of thing. Later,
just export/import as .AI files.
I am currently doing it with Corel Draw. It should work. But it seems like an
easy thing to do in 3DS. Or is it? Mebbe a BIG wish list item for R4? Flow text
along a line? Animate it snake-like (or any object for that matter… Allow a
major axis to be deformed in real time to follow a path. Hmmmmm….This sounds
neat!

Instead of *bending* the object which is a word,
I've had individuals create the letters as seperate
objects and place the letters around the world. Since
spinning is usually used, create a dummy object in the
middle of the world and link all of the letters to it.

The problem of putting individual letters around a path is that the
individual letter geometry isn't following the path. Sometimes,
that's the desired effect. If you want that each letter actually
follow the contour of a path, you need to work at each letter
geometry. Type Align was written specifically for that.
Simple. Just select half the text and bend it 180 degrees, and then select the
other half and bend it 180 degrees in the other direction.

In either the 2D Shaper (using 3D Display) or in the 3D Editor (after
creating the letters), toggle to global axis and place the axis in
the center of the globe. Place all of your letters in the same spot
(presumably at the top of the globe), and then rotate each of them
into position about the circumference of the globe.
