Real 3D to 3DS

Hi John,
I haven't talked to you in a LONG time. Hope you are doing well. Listen, I
have a quick question if you can talk about it. After being heavily involved in
the Real 3D (Windows) beta program for quite some time until just recently, I
came to 2 conclusions:
1) I gave up on any possibility of using the program to produce
serious animation for a variety of reasons.
2) The program has one of the best modelers, especially the uniform
B-Spline functions, that I have ever seen / used.
My participation in the program led to information that you were developing
something for them, or using their model format. Here's my questions:
1) Are you developing a R3D -> 3DS model converter, and if so, what
are the details / timing, etc.?
2) If so, would you happen to be developing one of these new IPAS
which would essentially allow the R3D modeler to run inside of
3DS – or is this even feasable ?
3) What is the status of Interchange these days for DOS/WINDOWS ?
I thank you for your time in advance.

Yes, I saw your postings on the Real 3D BBS. I'm not certain about
the future of our Real 3D converter. I've had enough calls from
interested parties who ask if we're going to support their format,
but they're often followed by calls like yours: "We looked at it, but
now we've dumped it." That's too bad. It doesn't encourage me in
terms of devoting company efforts to supporting their file format. As
for IC/Win, I hope "sooner" than "later." It's up and working to
some degree right now, but there's a lot of converters to test. And
we've got several format converters up and running as IPAS plug-ins,
too!
I'm interested in your experiences with Real3D. Besides the
modeller, what other areas impressed you or disappointed you? Would
you recommend it on any level as a adjunct (or competitor) to 3DS?
Have you considered gathering your thoughts and posting a review?
(My name is H.B. Siegel, I'm Director of Animation and Rendering for
Wavefront Technologies, but I'm a PC animation fan as well – I saw
some interesting things in Real 3D, but I've heard so little about
it)
Hi H.B.,
Sorry, I read and responded briefly to your E-Mail before reading this
message. I know quite a bit about Real 3D. Please see my E-Mail Reply and
respond to my questions if you would. Let me compose an appropriate reply
off-line after I get your next E-Mailed answers. I have already written a
tremendous amount of info posted to their beta conference under my name, as
well as under a gentelman named Gregory Beckner's name if you have access to
their BBS beta conference. It would probably be better if I post my detailed
reply to your E-Mail. I'll be looking for your E-Mailed answers and composing
my reply. Geez, that was kind of difficult to say. Thanks for your inquiry, and
I look foward to discussing this with you further. Nice to meet you as well.
Wavefront hangs out here, huh ? <g>
Regards,
Bill
