To-day – Thursday Feb 17th, 1994 – has been declared to be a national day of
rejoicing.
On this day – in the early hours after midnight – Hilary got the blasted
WANGTEK tape backup unit to work in his ancient (but noble) Amiga 2000. It
resisted a bit, but when I read all the Forum Mail to it in a very loud
voice,and explained the trouble that it had caused in the past, its single
light flashed and it started to backup everything in sight.
Serioiusly…. thanks for all the advice, help and encouragement I have
received from Forum members on what is now known widely in Russia as the
WANGESKI Syndrome.

Do have a QUESTION however…..
The 6250 tape cartridges I am using can contain up to 250 Megs of
backup stuff. The average partition on my hard disk contains around
100 Megs or under. Is there any way I can put… say partition DH0:
and DH1: on to the SAME backup tape? Otherwise have two "backups" on
one tape – one following the other ?
I am using the latest edition of QUARTERBACK as the software. At the
moment I erase the tape – then do a backup of a partition. Am
wondering what happens if I do a backup of partition DH0: then,
without removing the tape, try a backup of DH1: ? Does the second
DH1: backup write over the previous DH0:…. or does it find a new
place on the tape and do the backup there ?
If I do have to use one backup tape per HD partition… the so be it.

I don't know about QUARTERBACK, but with AMIBACK I can set it to do
several partitions at once. In fact, it backs up both my drives and
partitions all at one command. I suspect that Quarterback will do the
same.

I do better than that. Amiback puts all of the hard drive partitions on
Amigas on my network onto one tape. I might not be able to do that with
250 meg tape, but…

I fiddled around with QUARTERBACK but could not find anything in the various
Icons or little windows which gave me any control over just how much the thing
would back up. Hence the question. Maybe someone else with the dreaded
WANGTEK and Quarterback will have an answer.

Now, Hilary…..you are past the time of having to dread the WANGTEK. But
you may have to fiddle a bit with Quarterback to get it to back up the way
you want it to do.

Yes…. it was thanks to the help received in the Amiga "User" and "Arts"
Forums that gave me the courage to persist with the damn thing.
Will try backing up the DH0: partotion and then follow that with the DH1:
partition on the same tape. Will see if the DH1: overwrites the previous one,
or else finds a nice clear portion of the tape to write. If so, then I am in
business.
Have just put in a 500 Meg hard disk. Need that space to take all the stuff
generated by the "Toaster".

To makes things go a little faster just do a backup of SD0: then RAM:
to see if things work out OK. Restore both and you'll know within
minutes if it works. Just put 20-30 files in each and WHAM! see what
happens.

At the moment the little beast is backing things up fine. It is nice and fast.
If I asked it to backup SD0: it may get angry and quit ob me.

Hmmm… I am not familiar with Quarterback, as I use AmiBack. Within
AmiBack there is a recursive command which will tell the tape drive NOT to
rewind the tape after backing up and get ready to accept another back-up.
Otherwise as soon as the backup is complete, the tape is rewound and ready
for either retrieval or another backup.
From the docs I have on AmiBack I get the impression that if I used the
same tape to backup my two HD's (totalling three partitions) I would loose
all but the last backup.
There is a way around this. Lets say you have a 250mb tape, with 3 80mb
harddrives (will not matter on the number of partitions). With AmiBack I
can tell it to backup each of those HD's as one complete operation. Of
course if I have more Mb's than I have tape space it could get a little
tight (even with compression). With mine I have one 240mb HD with just
one partition on it (DH1: = games). I use one complete tape for that (the
heck with the 10mb leftover – no compression). My second HD is seperated
into two partitions (WB_3.0: & DH0:) comprising 80mb. Again one tape for
the whole drive, with no compression (For some reason I get a little
nervous with compression, I have enough tape space why compress?). I will
assume that Quarterback will let you do the same as above.

With Quarterback 6.0, to backup more than one partition at a time to a
tape, you need to clear the checkmark for "Rewind after backup or
restore". You will find this by selecting "Tape Options…" in the
"Options" menu. This will delay the automatic rewind the QB normally does
until after you exit Quarterback.
You still only get to tell Quarterback to do one partion at a time but at
least it will be ready to do the next partion after right after the first
one finishes.
If the tape has already been rewound, you'll also have to use the advance
function accessable through "Tape control…" under the "Utilities" menu.
It will let you skip over the partions you already have on a tape. Set
the count to be equal to the number of partions already on the tape.
And after that gets old you will want to use an ARexx macro to do backups
of multiple partitions. Quarterback comes with an example macro called
"Multiple Backups" or you can look at my macros in the file MLTBAK.LHA
which are in the AmigaUser Library 9, Disk Utilities.

Most certainly, when I know the Wangtek is in a good mood I will try it out.
Your suggestion is a good one.
It's funny…. I never had any help from the Vendor who produced Quarterback.
Help came from the users. Perhaps the vendor has gone out of business…
