HELP!!!
I am trying to transfer a mac file to AmigaDos, and I can't make
any sense of the manual. I have AMAXII Plus on an A3000. I can see
the file in my Mac window, and I know that I am supposed to use the
Transfer Program, but the window doesn't give me any choices to
choose from. I tried mounting a partition, but I don't know how to
do that either. i haven't played with this much, and when I need it,
I dont' know how. thanks in advance… Lisa

Lisa,
I assume you mean a MAC file that is on your MAC hard drive
partition? Once you have opened up the File Transfer program from
within your MAC desktop, click on TO AMIGADOS, then use the
PARTITION gadget to get to the folder where the file is that you
want to transfer to the Amiga. Choose the translation type, then
click on the filename and then on OK, edit the filename to what you
want it to be on the Amiga, then click on OK.
Before you can start transferring files from AMAX to an AmigaDOS
partition you have to select it in the A-MAX Startup screen before
you boot into the MAC emulation. Maybe you've already done this but
let's check your setup.
Click on [ Hard Disk / SCSI Preferences ]
Then next to [Driver Name] click in that gadget string and type in
the name of the DEVS: driver your using, for me it is
devs:gvpscsi.amhd
Next, the [File Transfer Partition gadget], click on it and type the
DEVICE name of the AmigaDOS partition you want to use, in my case it
is
DHR (your's may be DH0)
<please note, the colon [:] isn't needed but can be included>
When you press [Return] the DEV name should appear in the left column
under partitions, if it doesn't than AMAX doesn't recognize either
the device or perhaps the driver. If it does continue, if it doesn't
make sure the drive you want to use is mounted and the driver name is
spelled correctly.
Then choose Check for SCSI Manager Partitions and bullet checkmark it.
Click on OK and then SAVE your settings.
Now click on [Start A-Max II]
After bootup launch the File Transfer program. Click in credits box and
get to the GUI of the program. You didn't say what type of file format you
want to transfer (text, macbinary, postscript, None). I'm gonna go with an
easy one to start, choose NONE if it is an archived file.
Scroll through the filelist that is displayed and choose the directory
where you'd like the file transferred.
Then click on [TO AmigaDOS], locate the filename on the MAC partition
for transfer using the MAC file requester, double click on the
filename and then verify and click on OK in the transfer file window.
(here you can rename the file if you'd like removing any leading
spaces in the name. (best to strip spaces from the names). Then
click on OK again and it should transfer to the root of the AmigaDos
drive or directory you choose earlier.
I've discovered that File Transfer 2.5 bombs on my 345MB Maxtor, it
can't handle that large a directory listing, but it works fine on the
100MB drive and all my SyQuest drives.

Thanks for your help!! We are getting a Syquest today. Someone is
selling his old one for $399 and that includes 6 tapes… We're psyched.
Ev and I are looking into the Emplant emulator… It seems as if it would
be easier to use than Amax, and it will have the capacity to be a 486
which is what Ev really needs.
So, how are you? Whacha been up to? I've been really sick with a
sinus infection. We are going into our fifth week of illness, and
our third batch of antibiotics… Yuck… I hope you've faired
better than I.

Sounds good on the price for the SyQuest. 6 cartridges (they aren't
tapes) are worth aprox $420. Your getting a good deal. I presume this
is the 44MB drive?
Five weeks of illness! Yuck is too mild an adjective! I hope it isn't
contagious over the CISnet! (donning latex gloves 😀 )
Thursday I have off and I'm going to a seminar in Philly on
Publication Design. I'm real excited, something to do with page
layout and design. No phones, no installations, no salespersons
trying to hurry me to program cellular phones or fix cigarette plugs,
or tune off freq. transceivers. Just how to improve your
publications, regardless of what equipment or programs you use. Should
be a welcome change of pace. Then Friday, I took it OFF too, long
weekend coming. Maybe I'll go job hunting.
Gonna stop over at a service bureau I'm interested in obtaining
employment at and see how they're doing.
We followed your directions without a hitch until we got to the
Transfer program… There is nothing in the window to choose from to
transfer, and when I put in an Amigados disk, I get an "error 69" disk
is not readable/writeable (low-level). What does that mean? and
also, I didn't understand your instruction to…"Click in credits box
and get to the GUI of the program." It's Greek to me!! WE are
trying to transfer a text-only file.
BTW, The DH2: partition does not have the Booted/Mounted boxes
highlighted in the "Hard Drive SCSII Preferences" section… Is that
right?

When FileTransfer first launches you see a box with the program name
and other info on the authors, etc. Basically to whom the credit is
given for the program. GUI = Graphic User Interface, or what you see
of the program interface. Usually, you must click on the credits to
get rid of it and allow the program to build its window, gadgets and
radio buttons to click on. If nothing is showing up in the startup
screen on the left in the A-Max-Startup screen when you type DH2 then
it isn't recognizing the partition. If it does show up then AMAX does
see it and that is right. If your using floppies for the transfer,
then you don't want to put anything in the startup screen's box on
the right side of the window under Hard Drive SCSII Preferences.
I know this sounds very confusing and it would be a whole lot easier
if I were to just come over (up) there and fix it for you. Of course
I can't do that, but it sure would be easier.
Let me know how you make out, and BTW I can still remember those biscotti
biscuits you mailed to me. Not even the Post Office could crumble them!
