I'll probably let it run as is for a little while, though.
Just curious, Are you bailing out on the Amiga or did you replace
your system with an A4000? The reason I ask is you seem very
involved with raytracing on the amiga.
To be honest I guess I was bailing out initially. I had too many
people (big wigs in the Amiga community) tell me to. After listening
in on the Utilities Unlimited conference last night, I've decided to
hold out until the 486DX2 emulation on the EMPLANT board. If it pans
out (apparently OS/2 and NT capable), I'll stay with it. If not,
I'll jump over to a Pentium system or the likes. I'd hate to be
"dead-ended" by a system that may end up 4 times slower than its
closest competitor.
For now I think I'll hang on a little longer.

As for what happens to the Amiga I think its fate is sealed by
how… and if CBM released a newer version. Until then I'm going to
hang in… there. Even if I was to switch to a new platform, I would
still keep my… two Amigas. Pentium systems are out of my reach
financialy for the time… being. As to what the PowerPC holds we
will just have to wait and see.
Hopefully the EMPLANT is the answer to Amiga's survival. Especially
since you basically have no limitations with the ability to
multi-task between any DOS (MS, MAC, etc). Even if Amiga dies you
still have a computer.

This is PURELY SPECULCTION, so take it with a LARGE pinch of salt.
I read an interview in one of the UK AMiga magazines about a year ago
in which the bosses of CBM in the UK said that the new range of
Amigas was to include multi-platform emulation built-in. They would
also run FASTER than even a DX2 machine, and of course it would be
RISC based.
Now MY thinking lends me to think that perhaps the new Amigas are goin
to be PowerPC based because all of the above is true of this
technology. For example, the new Macs that are commin out in a week
or two are PowerPC based and will run NATIVE Mac application AND
PowerPC specific software Simultaneously completely transparently to
the user, in fact only the important parts of the system software has
been ported, the old stuff still runs 680×0 code.
If the new Amigas were PowerPC based, there is no reason why you
could emulate PC, Mac and old Amiga Operating Systems (at a
processing overhead of course) concurrently!
Let me hear all of your views on this (I'm sure that some will
disagree avidly, and others will just think… <g> )
PS some of my facts may have been pure speculation on the magazines
part. It's been a LONG time since I read it 😉
Well, the rumours were that the Amiga OS was ported to a DEC Alpha
(or the Alpha was emulating a 680×0). DEC supposedly had an
agreement to sell Amigas as low end multimedia X Workstations or
something and there were reports of people seeing Workbench running
on Alpha processors. I never heard anything concrete or reliable.
When someone on the net said that Commodore had the OS ported to
Alpha, I started walking around the lab asking everyone where the
machine was. I got several good laughs, but no one could point me to
it. 🙂

I'm looking to buy an A3000, but I can only afford about $800 for it. I really
don't know what your system is worth w/out breaking it up. Let me know if $800
is anywhere near resonable. I'll ask a friend of mine who deals with them.
Just wanted to start a dialogue on the possibility of my buying it!

will hold onto the system for the time being. You should still contact
