#FLI / FLC in MS Viewer

A couple questions:
a) Does anyone know how to put FLI/FLC files in a Microsoft Viewer title? The
documentation and the Developer Network CD all imply that it outta be possible,
but give no examples and we haven't been able to figger it out.
We've got the latest MCIAAP.DRV, but that doesn't work. it says "Cannot
display" in the box where the animation should be playing.
Any suggestions?
b) if we want to post a message in a forum (like the one below) how do we know
WHO specifically to send it to? We chose you because of a message asking you
to create a list of files for new users. Do you work for AutoDesk? Is it
possible to post general messages for everyone to look at on CompuServe? If
so, how do we do it from WinCim? Why won't it let us send a forum message
without putting something in the TO field of the dialog box?

Viwer 2.0 and MCIAAP don't seem to like each other very much from what I hear
over in the WINMM forum. Your best bet is to convert your .fl? files to .avi
with the VIDEDIT utility that comes with Video for Windows. Viewer handles the
avi's nicely.
There's been some discussion of this matter in the Viewer and Developer
Relations sections of WINMM. You might want to check in there for more info
(lots of it) relating to Viewer. There's also a new version of both Viewer and
the Viewer compiler over there that you can download (though neither one, to my
knowledge, addresses the known problems with Viewer and .fl?s.).

I'm not to familiar with the problems that the MCIAAP is having with the
Viewer, Fill me in. In the meantime, if you need to use the FLC format, you can
use the Media player instead of the Autodesk Windows Player. If the MCI driver
is installed, the media player will play Flic files as well as AVI, WAV, etc…
This has an added advantage as the Media Player is an OLE server.

I've taken the liberty of uploading a few of the messages I spoke of
to you via your mail box, rather than clutter up this forum. It's
been known for some time, to those who develop in Viewer, that the
Autodesk driver and Viewer are currently incompatible. I personally
don't need to use .flc files directly in Viewer, but it would sure be
nice if a revised driver could give me (and others) the capability.

Take a look at Doug's message to you. I have spoken to people on the phone with
VIEWER who have confirmed for me that you CAN use the insert object choice to
insert a Media Clip, and if the media player is the most current, that will
indeed play FLC files. Since the calls to viewer are being made by media
player, instead of directly to AAWIN, it works.
Sorry I haven't tested this out personally. Some time ago I ordered the
Microsoft Developers Network CD, but the purchasing dept must feel that I need
more of a challenge here in Product Support. <bg> It hasn't arrived yet. When
it does, I will confirm that this work-around indeed works around … and also
see what I can do to make the MCI calls directly accessible (if possible).

By now you may have noticed that your message to Jeffrey Pike (Autodesk Sysop)
was visible to others. By directing it at Jeffrey, it will catch his attention
when he enters the forum. By directing it to sysop, it captures the attention
of a small group of people when they enter the forum ("Message Waiting").
The usual address for broadcasting to a large group is to make sure you're
addressing the correct section in the forum, then send to ALL. This does not
show as a Message Waiting for anyone, but you're indicating that anyone (not
just Autodesk personnel) should feel free to help out.

Carl…here is information I received on playing .FLC files within MS View for
Windows, which allowed me to incorporate them in a PowerPoint
presentation…from the messages, I'm not sure if Viewer will handle them as
easily…Doug
To incorperate a Flic in a powerpoint application (or any windows
application for that matter) you can use the newest version of the
MEDIA PLAYER. The latest version of this player is an OLE server, and
can play Flic files. SO, you would choose insert object, select MEDIA
CLIP, when the media player comes up choose options and select
Autodesk Animation, and then choose the Flic file from the hard disk.
P.S. If you don't have a version of the media player that supports
Flic files you can get one for free by downloading the Video For
Windows runtime module. You can get VFWRUN.ZIP on the Microsoft
Multimedia Forum (GO WINMM). When you install the VFW runtime, it
automaticaly updates your MEDIA PLAYER. By the way, to get the media
player to work with Flics, you will also need to install the MCI
driver (MCIAAP.ZIP from this forum…library 1).

When you said "this forum" in the above statement, I wasn't sure where to look
for the MCIAPP.ZIP file, library #1 of the ASOFT forum or WINMM. So, I looked
in both. Library #1 of the ASOFT forum (the forum to which I posted this note)
does not contain any files. Library #1 of the WINMM forum also does not
contain the MCIAPP.ZIP file. Does anyone know where it REALLY can be found?

It's in the IPAS/POCO/AAWIN section of the library.

I was wrong when I said that library #1 of this (ASOFT) forum doesn't
contain any files. Among the MANY that are there is MCIAAP.ZIP, for
which I was looking. I usually use OzCIS to access CIS, and when I
performed an update scan of Lib#1, it showed no files. After
receiving another reply that said that MCIAAP.ZIP was indeed in
Lib#1, I instructed OzCIS to perform a complete quick scan, not just
an update, and all the files appeared. Mea Culpa!
