Hi. I was wondering if there is a way – perhaps via an IPAS routine – to have a thin black line rendered around all faces/surfaces to mimmick an outlined, "cartoon look" for 3ds rendered objects? Any IPAS developers interested? Or, can this be achieved – with great tedium – through 3D Studio directly? I'm not really interested in taking the rendered flic and outlining every detail in every frame in a paint program either… Any insights to achieve a cartoon look for black-outlined edges for 3ds objects and scenes would be greatly appreciated.

have you thought about using Aldus Gallery Effect filters? You can run the targa frame output from 3DS through Photoshop or Photostyler and apply filters to them. You'll probably want to use some sort of batch processor (I use the one that comes with Central Point Desktop).

Hi ! IFF you are rendering to .FLC and have ANI Pro, then I would sugest using Edge tool with brush size of 3-5 pixels. Depending on what need the outline I would use macro (for multiple objects) or if just edging character on flat background ckick on background then if ok turn T (time button on) and Redo. other possiblites might be using Seperate tool with Hollow ink -to create unfiled outline, then seperate – opaque with outline color to darken, then back fill will desired color.. kind of messy but might be what you need if complex scene. A Poco routine might be indicated if it is something you anticipate being regular part of your bag of tricks. I might be able to help more if some details of 'Toon are available. hope helps some Dave Wright Wyeknot inc

If you have 3DSr3, you can use face-mapping with a triangle (or square) map a la the example in the thing2.3ds sample file that comes with it. It makes perfect little edges around every face. – G
