this is wild. i wouldn't read it over there. i totally disagree with the p.
oliver premise that public domain s/w is immoral (or should i say amoral?)
but hey, the slashing retoric is almost as good as bs back in college. my 2
cents: software and information is not the same as refridgerators and cars.
if I give you my refridgerator, there's a big cost. If I give you some of my
time and some of my electricity to copy a diskette I'm not out all that much,
but wow, the value of that diskette has been doubled. imagine economics
which is not based upon scarcity any more! (well, scarcity of intelligence
maybe.) NO PERSONAL SLUR INTENDED, just commentary upon human frailty and
laziness.
Imagine when the best programmers decide to say "To hell with being a
sacrificial animal, let the mediocrities give their junk away without copying
my stuff in the process, I'll stop distributing my software entirely". A good
impetus for the computer industry, to be sure. (Merely a practical point, that
relates to the moral issue.)
