Sound Samplers

Well I'll tell you what I've heard about the Mimetics product (I've ordered
one but have not seen it yet). Please remember that this is a fierce
competitor giving you a biased view!
The Mimetics sampler was designed primarily for use with their Sound Scape
system which I hear is very good. Both Mimetics and FutureSound are IFF
compatible so their recordings can be used by other programs.
The Mimetics Sampler is a fixed rate sampler (approx. 18K). FutureSound is
variable up to 28K. FutureSound also features an adjustable gain control
with an on screen VU meter (I believe Mimetics' is a fixed input gain).
Mimetics is Stereo and FutureSound is not. However FutureSound has multi
track recording capability (with copying and mixing features). Record length
is limited by memory, Mimetics I believe has a 32K limit on samples (I'm not
certain on that point).
Well that's all the info I have. I hope it helps.
P.S. Since a Microphone is included with FutureSound, you can be recording 3
minutes after opening the box!
What do you mean Mimetics is stereo and FutureSound is not? I thought that
both were stereo, in the sense that you can record a track on the left
channel and one on the right. Do you mean that the mimetics can digitize both
channels together? By the way, can the FutureSound support memory >512K? One
last note, in some magazine I saw a claim that the Mimetics' sample rate was
32K. What gives?
The IFF specs mention a sampled sound compression scheme named Fibonacchi. Any
experience with this? I seem to remember a code sample given in the IFF
specs… in Pascal?

Maybe you get stereo by buying two boxes, and setting them side by side. 1/2
🙂
It seems that the box plugs in the joystick port, and the software assumes
that it is plugged in the second port. I wonder if they are using the A/D
converters that are built in the Amiga? Hummm…
At any rate, I bought the darn thing today and I still don't see how it is
stereo. There is no reason that it wouldn't support multi-track playback
(e.g. stereo) However, the software included does not have this feature.
It seems to be just another case of false advertising accompanied with the
worst phone support: I called up the company about 6 times (toll), and
every time the secretary takes my number and promises that they will get
back to me… Should I mention that they still haven't?
