#ER/NT/Alpha/PAR/question
10 messages in this thread
Hello, glad to see you all here.
Couple questions:
1. Does ER directly support the PAR? (without RazorPro)
2. How much faster does ER (and transjammer for that matter) run on a:
233mhz Alpha/NT3.5 32MB vs.
Pentium 90 32MB NT3.5 vs
P90 32MB WfWG3.11?
(HD/Video/etc. being equal)
3. What features does the SGI version have that the NT/Windows versions don't
have?
4. What's the speed difference between ER on an Indy (decent ram for
OS/Program) vs a Pentium or Alpha 233?
Thanks for the time, and keep up the great products, and thanks for Alpha/NT
support!! (you guys/gals are with it.. 🙂

>1. Does ER directly support the PAR? (without RazorPro)
ER cannot load from the PAR but it is possible to save to the PAR. ER will
complain that
the PAR drive does not really exist but after the error is cancelled, it will
work fine.
>2. How much faster does ER (and transjammer for that matter) run on a DEC?
A multi-processor DEC w/ cache is many times faster than a single processor
Pentium but
the dual-processor Pentium machines should not be overlooked. A single
processor DEC w/
no cache is just a little faster than a P90.
>3. What features does the SGI version have that the NT/Windows versions don't
have?
Audio Synchronization
Advanced frame plot
Color correction
Matte-Roll
Allows crossing-edges
And too much more to fit here… 🙂

On single processor machines, it would be close (probably the DEC). W/ multiple
processors, its anybody's guess. It would be too close to call.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm thinking about the Dual P90 now, over the single Alpha 233. Is ER
multithreaded, taking advantage of both processors when rendering? If so,
great.
Do you plan on bringing the entire feature set from the SGI to the NT arena?
That would be nice to have. Mabe a "PRO" version.. (so regular ER doesn't go
up in price.)
What PC digital video boards have you seen ER run on? Any recommendations?
MAX? Targa 2000?
Thanks,
John Jordan
ER is a native NT app and is most definelt multi-threaded so it will run
happily on multi-processor machines (and use them too!)
The advanced features of SGI ER will trickle down as WinER matures.
There are just too many capture/output boards to recommend just one. You might
take a look at Advanced Imaging magazine for more info. They deal specifically
with that kind of stuff.

Sounds great. How much is the NT version?
John Jordan
The Intel version lists for $495 and the MIPS/DEC/PowerPC version lists for
$795.

Is the Intel NT version the same as the Windows 3.1 version? What's the 3.1
version listed at?
Thanks,

The Intel NT version is the same as the Windows 3.1 (same price). It is a
Win32s app as well as being NT native.

Sounds great. I'll have to pick it up. 🙂
