Hi All, I told John in a previous message that I would get this started so here is the first question. How about a user comparison of the black box type VS. a computer based WFM V-Scope??? I have done some preliminary evaluations in preparation for some in-depth reviews of these units. I am not looking at PC based units because, in my opinion, they are not too useful for DTV situations. Most of the DTV enthusiasts (amateur and professional) I have run into have only one PC. If you have a WFM/VS in your PC, you can't be monitoring your video at the same time as you are editing. A standalone unit, either with built-in CRT or a rasterizing unit, is more versatile and offer more opportunity for use. They are also unaffected by forces within the PC (hear, EMI, RFI, etc.) and they don't take any slots in the PC, leaving more available for video and audio devices. James, My experience with PC based Wave Form Monitors and Vectorscopes has been limited to the DPS Personal V-Scope. However with this board the only time that you need to "talk" to it via software is when you might want to make a change to some of its settings. Normally I find that I can just leave it in one setting while I am editing without having to come back to it again and again, disrupting the editing process. Now maybe other editors do grab the knobs on their WFM/VScope continuosly, because they can, but I think that in general they do the same as I, leaving it set in one position or another and monitoring the "display" monitor. The DPS V-Scope takes a feed of the Program Output and then provides a composite signal to a dedicated monitor that provides the WFM/V-Scope display. It operates continuosly with any and all other software on the machine (the board itself simply draws power from the PC slot and all control signals come through a serial interface). -John -John

One serious drawback of (at least the original) Personal VScopes is that there is no genlock input. Makes it tough to time an A/B roll suite for match-frame editing. wmc – via Autopilot!
