I'm in need of a rendering friendly solution for the creation of a Aluminium colored metal panels. Anyone familiar with architecture, the panels are square (cassette system), like the ones mostly used by arch.Richard Meier, however instead of white those panels are aluminium in my project, only part of the project is covered. I could do it using auto refl., or flat single reflection maps, for know they are in the default color which does not look bad at all, but they should be a bit more lively, anyone has any suggestion doing otherwise then the calculation of reflection maps. The project is quite large about 180 objects, 200.000+ faces, 7.5MB PRJ. file, so I hope for a solution not requiring refl.map calculation??? Christophe

>>…reflection maps…a bit more lively…<< Try granite.cel for a RefMap, Christophe, and let me know if that works for you. -Alan

<<Try granite.cel for a RefMap>> You really love that texture, hey? I vote that in the next version of 3DS that GRANITE.CEL be renamed to ALAN.CEL <g> David "Prisoned in CEL block 12" Gould

He-he, yeah, ever since I noticed how it's tightly-packed, high-contrast pixels make for interesting RefMaps for flat surfaces, I've used it (and deritives of it) for many projects. I hardly think it should be renamed, though. -Alan

Just to let you know Alan, GRANITE is the perfect map for what I intended. And saves me from using reflection maps, for rendering on 1 machine, otherwise I could not finish on time? Christophe

Great to hear that it's working for you, Christophe! -Alan

I haven't done this, but you could try using a file like REFMAP.GIF as a texture map and applying some self-illumination. Masking the self-illum could enhance the effect, too. If you wanted the panels to "glint" in the sun, you could try morphing materials between low self-illum and high self-illum. Let me know if it works<g>

<<If you wanted the panels to "glint" in the sun, you could try morphing materials between low self-illum and high self-illum.>> Or use VARY.SXP( which comes with 3DS) in the "Self-Illum" slot and change the start and end colour. David "Just dropped in to say BOOO!" Gould

Good idea David. I found that self-illum. materials are good for lots of things if you don't overdo it. How common is it to use self-illumination (question to all)? It looks like I'll be back in Paris in June or Sept. and I wouldn't mind attending a user group meeting if you have them. I'll let you know as the dates approach. TedB !^NavFont01F0006MGHHHV5D3A

<<It looks like I'll be back in Paris in June or Sept. and I wouldn't mind attending a user group meeting if you have them.>> Good question, I'll have to ask Autodesk here in Paris and see if there is a user group. If there is I'll let you know. David "Used group" Gould
