#255 material Limit?
5 messages in this thread
I have just gotten the message "Already 255 materials in use" when trying to
merge a 3ds file with a large project. I have not seen this message before,
and I was wondering if this was documented anywhere, or if there is a setting
to change to increase this number of materials. We are working on a very large
project file with many materials, and it would be nice to not deal with this
limitation. Thanks for any suggestions.

3D Studio is limited to 255 materials in each 3DS file. I don't think there is
any workaround for this! The only thing to do is to reduce the materails so the
total dont get over 255.

Thanks.

You may not actually have used up all your materials. Any that where created
and used at one time in the .prj may still be taking up "space". What you need
to try is to
1. Make a new library from the old one. 2. Load that new library. 3.
Resave the project. 4. Instead of loading the project try merging in
everything.
This seemed to clear out any materials that were take up space on our projects.
Didn't spend a lot of time on the problem, at the time we had a deadline and I
didn't document exactly what I did. It may have been some other step similiar
to this that I just forgot. (The reason I realized that "our" of reaching the
limit was false, was that I pulled up Get Material From Scene and manually
counted about 180 materials.)
Hope any of this helps.

Thanks a bunch. I will try your suggestions. It seems to me that we might
really have reached the limit, but all solutions are helpful. Our project
actually merges student projects into a single one, and tends to be less than
optimized (material-wise). I really appreciate your response.
