1,500 3DS Meshes on CD

Hey Everybody,
AUTODESIGN GRAPHICS, has a product that boasts "over 1,500 Industry
Quality 3DS models". It is called Master Mesh Library Collection and,
to my understanding, contains much of the same data the other
products have: Human Anatomy, Animals, Automobiles, Motorcycles,
Trucks, Airplanes, People, Dinosaurs, Boats, Military Stuff, and even
Historic Structures. They estimate its value at over $500,000.00
which almost made me hang up! But I hung on long enough for them to
explain to me that they are having a special customer drive and are
offering around a hundred of the CD's for $2000.00!
Download "3DSMMLC.ZIP" from the Take5/Want Ads area and feel free to
pass this file around. I don't think this Gravy Train will run long.
Well, at $333 each, 1,500 models would cost $500K. It always cracks me up when
modeling companies use Viewpoint's prices to value their own creations. 🙂

I find your remark slightly skwed when it comes to the pricing of Viewpoint's
Datasets. I think that as a company that prides itself of its work, Veiwpoint
as proven its expertise in a specified field. If other 3D modeling companies
feel they have the same quality work that Viewpoint provides, there is nothing
wrong in that company using Viewpoint's pricing as model for their pricing.
All companies have to live on their merits, wouldn't you agree? Veiwpoint has.

Yes, I think all companies live on their merits. I didn't mean to disparage
Viewpoint in any way… I think you guys are the undisputed leaders in your
field. I don't think I've ever encountered another modeling company with
prices as consistently as high as yours, but I do not think that is a bad
thing! You also have very high quality models. I said I think it's funny that
other modeling companies compare their prices to yours, and this recent posting
was a perfect example of that. It's as if every other 3D animation program
from the $50 ones to the $500 ones to the $5,000 ones made the claim that "if
we were Softimage, this would cost $50,000."

Gravy train? Hardly. I'm with John in that I don't think that just because
you have an overpriced company like Viewpoint, you should automatically assign
those prices (As if they were industry standards) to whatever is out there. So
by even mentioning that at retail they might cost 500k, you just discredited
the whole offer.

I would like you to pick out any model from Viewpoint that cost 300.00 Make
it, pay your self a wage
and complete it for under 300.00 with the same detail . Unless you charge 4.75
hour I think your in for a let down.
Model making is a art just like programing. John's disk is made from PD it cost
him very little, most are free
But ask him how much his translator is and you will see it not free.
Viewpoint's are custom made for a job. overpriced?
