Ed, >How did the playback go? Wonderfully! Until VLab-M I was limited to about 200-250 frames (using DCTV) for anims I could play from memory. Now there are no limits! And of course there is the added benifit of a rock solid 30fps playback regardless of the scene's complexity. Add to that the ability to layer on CD quality sound and I'm having one H*ll of a good time with this! 🙂 The only thing I have not yet tryed is field rendering. But I'll get to it! …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-

Paul; Is there any similarity in function of VLab-M to either the Video Toaster or OpalVision (with the not-forthcoming video processor)? In addition to creating anims, can one do "video processing"? Must one use the Retina board with it or can one use another graphics card such as PicassoII? Sorry if my questions are a bit stupid but I haven't really been keeping up with the info on this system. Thanks; Hank

Hank, The VLM system is made up of two boards: the V-Lab motion board which handles the video and the Toccata board which handles the audio. You can buy them separately or in a bundle for about $1800. The VLM system will: Digitize video in real time converting to to a stream of JPEG images stored on a hard drive. Edit the video clips you've recorded to the HD Assemble these clips on a time line and add special effect transitions Add some simple titling Play back the recorded & edited video With the Toccata board full CD quality stereo sound is included in the above. You do not need a graphics card since the V-LAB motion card has both composit and Y/C video in and out. In fact you don't need a TBC either! 🙂 …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-

Thanks for the response, Paul. Is the titling capability very limited? Would there be any incompatibility with a PicassoII card? Hank

Hank, >Is the titling capability very limited? Well yes and no. There is an "easy" titling requestor that will read a text file and throw up titles in Times Bold and scroll them. Then there is the "hard" mode where you have to write a script which specifies the font, text, position, and movement of the titles. In theory you could, by using the scripting language and the time line effects, create any kind if title you could imagine. BUT in reality who would want to spend three days setting up and debugging a title sequence. I guess the bottom line is the the power of a very good CG engine is already there, but the interface does not yet exist to allow the non programming user to access it. >Would there be any incompatibility with a PicassoII card? Sorry I don't know. …Warp Engine Engaged… -Paul-
