#Bad DS3 Guide file

It seems that the DiskSalv.guide file on my DiskSalv3 disk is defective – every
time I try to load it my machine crashes. No other guides give me this
problem. I remember when I first installed DiskSalv3 I had this problem, but I
guess I forgot about it, and now I ran into it again. Can you email me a lhad
guide file, or do I need to order a new disk, or what?

Dunno what might be causing your problem but I was having a similar result
with:
$VER: DiskSalv.guide 12.12 (29.10.94) for DiskSalv 12.12

using AmigaGuide [under DOS 2.1] of the following flavor:
amigaguide 34.3
[AmigaGuide 6752 —-rwed 29-Oct-94 10:27:36]
amigaguide 34.11
[amigaguide.library 62932 —-rwed 10-Aug-93 13:58:50]
I found that if I started at the beginning of the guide file and
reformatted (to 76 cols or so) the long lines (that later versions of
Amigaguide/MultiView would 'wordwrap' I guess) then, after some point, the
guide file would load/function 'OK'. Consequently, I'm convinced that my
problem was associated with one (or more) of the long lines and that the DOS
2.x version of AmigaGuide not only doesn't 'wordwrap' but doesn't handle the
non-wrapped lines too well :).

I used Jim Butterfield's excellent Trimmer ARexx macro to reformat the file to
75 columns and now it loads without crashing. It's not perfect – some lines
seem to be truncated by the Amigaguide reader program – but at least I can go
through it for some highlights until I get 3.1.

Your guide file isn't defective, at least not in that it is any different than
the guide files on everyone else's disk.
Amiga Guide is defective.
It should be impossible for a .guide file to crash Amiga Guide, but somehow
ours can with some versions of AG. Dave hasn't been able to figure out what he
is doing that AG doesn't like, so he hasn't been able to fix it.
There are a few alternative AmigaGuide viewers, you could download one and try
that instead. You could also upgrade to OS 3.1, since MultiView doesn't seem
to have any problems at all.
