#Warp/A3000@16mhz-help..

Hello- Im thinking of speeding up my A3000 @ 16 mhz. Im told that to use a warp
engine, or any other accel card, that I need to get a rev 7 ramsey, a new Dmac
chip.., etc etc. Is this true ? What are the requirements to run a warp engine
(68040/33 or 40) in an A3000, chip wise? Do I need to upgrade my chips, before
I go with the warp,or is there another solution ? Any help please would be
greatful..Tnx in advance- Mike Howell.

To my knowledge, a Warp accelerator for a desktop A3000 has not been released
yet. There is a tower version that uses "jumper" cables to attach to certain
parts of the motherboard, which eliminates the need to upgrade Ramsey & DMAC.
The problem with fitting the tower Warp card into a desktop is that the
installed memory SIMMs will be hitting on the bottom of the floppy drive bays.
A board is in the works to use two slanted SIMM sockets to allow for more room,
but I have not seen anyone selling it yet.

I sure hope you're wrong, because my dealer just ordered a Warp Engine 3040
directly from MacroSystemsUS for me, for my desktop A3000. Where did you hear
that?

I read an article in AmigaWorld a few months ago about the different versions
that were going to be released. I have also spotted advertisements from
Creative Computers that stated the Warp 3040 would only work in a tower system.
So far I have not spotted a desktop version though. There may have been a
redesign that I didn't catch. Originally, the tower board was to have four
upright SIMM sockets for a total of 128MB, while the desktop board would have
two slanted sockets for a total of 64MB. If the board you ordered can hold
128MB, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

I'm not 100% sure, but the MacroSystem people only asked my dealer whether I
had 2.04+ or not, so… But I'll call them tomorrow to check.

As in the A4000 version, there should be only 4 SIMM slots. With 16 MB SIMMs
that would give you 64 and with 32 MB SIMMs that would give you 128 MB. 32 MB
SIMMs don't exist? I know they're damn expensive!

Yes, 32MB SIMMs are available! I don't think you caught all of the last
message though. The tower board has 4 sockets for a total of 128MB (4 x 32MB =
128MB), while the desktop version _was_ to be designed with 2 slanted sockets
for a total of 64MB (2 x 32MB = 64MB). I have no idea what the final outcome is
or will be on the desktop version of the board, but I can verify that there is
no room for upright SIMM sockets in a desktop A3000. (Hopefully there will be
four slanted sockets, but the original plan was only for two.)
