Jeric, just out of curiousity, what would a CD-ROM unit with SCSI interface
cost? Just out of curiousity. Really.

Well, that certainly is coming down from the $1500 to $2000 that was bandied
about last year. I think all it will take is a drop in the price to the "magic"
level that encourages the hackers to start to use it.

Larry, how much differance is there between a CD-ROM player and a CD music disk
player? I talking about the player itself not the controller…Dave

I really don't know much about CD-ROM or digital audio disks at all. I
can't see a need to have much differences in the mechanisms, but that doesn't
mean that there aren't. Any experts out there care to comment?

The only thing I have seen is that it requires much higher data
reliability than does audio CD and better error correction also. That would
lead one to believe that better tracking mechanisms are also required.

Iwas wondering because the price of the audio player is really low at this
point. I payed $125.00 for a Sony audio disk player (an inside deal, but an

I'll admit it is an interesting thought Dave, and certainly worth pursuing if
the mechanism will handle the CD-ROM format and of course if the CD-ROM disks
are physically compatible. I suspect though, that if it were possible, someone
would have come out with a low cost drive by now.

No doubt, I was just curious. The point was that the price of the audio
players dropped so fast that maybe the price of the data machines mught come
down at the same rate. There was a reply to this thread that said it would
require more accuracy and better error checking…Dave

The current issue of CD-ROM Review (March/April 87) lists about 25
CD-ROM's, manufacturers, and prices. The SCSI models from SONY range from
$700-750 sugg. retail. I think that is without the controller. The other
manufacturer's models range from about $1000 to about $1300 sugg. retail
(with controller, I think). One Univ. in my area got a SONY for "under
$600". The OEM price for an SCSI version (without controller) is listed as
about $400;.00 . Some government agencies are starting to release
prototype CD-ROM disks with HUGE amounts of their mainframe data on them.
Most of the applications programs are for IBM AT's. I sure would like to
see the Amiga latch onto this area.
Those are amazingly low prices Bill! I haven't seen CD-ROM review, but will
keep my eye out for it. Speaking of software, just how is it put on the
CD-ROM in the first place?
I sure would like to see it for the AMiga, but I imagine someone will have
to see the demand for it, or at least the potential demand.

Information is generally put on a CD-ROM in a mastering process by
a commercial facility from 9-track tape. Several of these facilities
exist including LaserVideo in Chicago. My best information is that the
first master costs $7500 to $20,000+. Then, production CD costs are
very low. Meridian Data in Soquel, California offers a CD-ROM
simulation and development system for under $50,000 that runs on the
IBM-PC. With that unit you can make your own CD from 9 track
(mainframe) tape. While this answers part of your question, you seemed
to be asking how Amiga software would be put on CD's. If so, this is a
common misconception about CD's.
While it should be possible to put executable programs on CD, that
is not its most likely use. We are talking about 500+ MEGABYTES of
storage. That is 5000 programs of 100K size !!! I could not afford
that many commercial programs and I think the market would be too
small for any commercial venture. What CD's do well is store data,
lots and lots of data. All of the commercial CD's I have read about
store only data and they store it in a format which could be read by
any computer with a proper interface (including device driver) and a
proper applications program to read the data format. The Amiga can be
hooked to a proper interface (SCSI) at the present time. If the Amiga
interface manufacturer's make a CD-ROM device driver, then
applications programers could start writing programs to use this data.
At the present time IBM users have access to a device driver and
applications programs which allow access,on CD, to a wide variety of
reference libraries. A significant portion of this CD data is
commercial data stored in a binary format which only the "official"
application program can read without the threat of a lawsuit. The IBM
application program generally comes on a floppy disk and the CD is
reserved for the data itself. However that situation is changing as
everyone salivates over the millions of GIGABYTES of PUBLIC data that
Uncle Sam has on 9 track tape. (Continued next message)

Several commercial concerns are attempting to secure a portion of this
huge government PUBLIC information. It is frequently stored on 9 track tape
in sequential files of 8-bit ASCII data which can be purchased for $100-300
to cover the cost of the tape and handling. These commercial concerns then
convert the data to 9 track tape in a binary format with some simple but
"unique" format, and have the data put on CD. VIOLA, the information is now
proprietary, can be sold for a thousand dollars per CD, and another
innovative fellow gets rich on data acquired with our tax dollars.
Fortunately, Uncle Sam is looking at releasing its data on CD (See efforts
of SIGCAT). If this effort prevails any computer that can read 8 bit ASCII
and drive a CD-ROM will have access to the data for the cost of the disk
plus a few bucks. So far, only IBM has the device driver and applications
programs to open up the field. I want the Amy in there also.
The first U.S. Government CD is now available for $35.00. It contains
U.S. Geological Service mapping data. If I could buy a CD-ROM device
driver at any reasonable price, I would gladly spend the $1000 to purchase
the CD-ROM, SCSI interface, and Sony or Phillips machine. Then I would
write an applications program to use that data. Any mediocre programmer
with a knowledge of cartography could do so. At that point the Amiga could
join the Big Blue Market (IBM and compatibles) as a potential market for
applications programs to use government data on CD-ROM. The Amiga is
especially well suited for this because it can access 8 MEG of memory.
Unfortunately, this is all of no avail without a device driver which allows
the Amiga to read (at least) ASCII files from a CD-ROM. I know almost
nothing about the SCSI interface or the High Sierra data storage format.
But, I do have adequate knowledge to use that data, and other data, in an
applications program. I want the Amiga to be part of the parade from the
beginning. If you or anyone else can help me in generating interest in a
CD-ROM device driver for the Amiga, I would appreciate it.
Hi – Boy do I have a deal for you!
Our SCSI Host is set up for CD-ROM. We have looked at several
CD devices, but have not been willing to fork out the bucks to buy one.
If you buy one, and if you'll loan it to us for a month or so, we'll
write the driver for you (and will put it on out distribution disk that
goes out with every SCSI controller and SCSI hard drive). The current
CD_ROM units are all SCSI devices, but they use some NON-SCSI control
codes.
Well, how's that deal. You will have to buy our SCSI controller
to hook the CD-ROM to your Amiga, unless you have our SCSI Hard Drive which
comes with the controller, but we'll give you the driver!!!!!!!

Thanks for the information Bill. it all sounds very exciting indeed, and with
the prices you previously mentioned, I am sure that there will be considerable
interest. I think it may be about time I started checking a few things out.
Would you be able to point me at the appropriate sources of technical info
(books, magazines, etc.?) I will need to know about interface specs, control
signals, disk format, and like that.
Another thing that I thought of while reading your message was that the 8 meg
memory space is valuable indeed, and I wonder if someone could tell me if the
Xebec controller configures into the space that should be left for RAM? Any
other SCSI controllers that don't configure to this space?
