I have read all the positive reports on the Insider and am considering the
purchase of one. My big question after reading their ad in AC is what is the
real performance difference in "no forced wait state" as opposed to truly "no
wait state" designs?

Read the file INSIDE.TXT in DL 2, that should explain things to you. My
understanding of it is that there is no difference…that is, Insider adds no
wait states of it's own.

Wait states come in about three severities. The Insider will add a wait
state when it absolutely has to refresh the memory. At all other times, the
memory runs at full speed.
A memory that has "forced wait states" will have a wait state on every
cycle, and will slow things down considerably.
A memory that has no wait states at all will be about 1% faster than
the Insider, but at the added cost of having to use very fast rams. If you see
any memorys that say they have no wait states, it generally means that they do
not force a wait state on every cycle.

Fred, The "No forced wait state" statement on our INSIDER board means that on
every memory access to the FAST Ram we are not forcing the 68000 to wait for us
each time. Although a collision can occur when we are doing refresh and the
68000 wants some data, then a wait state would occur. Its not something that
an INSIDER owner would notice happening anyway and I know that Ageis Draw runs
about 5 times faster than in a 512k machine so the Memory is really FAST as far
as the system is concerned. -Ralph
