Questions: First, is the cable connected to the existing drive cable as an
extension, or does it replace the existing cable and get connected directly
to the interior of the drive? Second, I heard that if you make the drive
cable too long, there could be timing problems with the drive. Do you know
anything about this?

It's an extension cable, so it makes your existing cable 3' longer.
No, I don't believe an extra three feet will introduce any timing problems.
Why don't you call the company and ask about it?
