"theoretical best S/N ratio you can get is 52db", and you wondered why I
thought something like the Hybrid Arts offboard 16 bit sampler for the Atari
was a good idea for the Amiga.

A 12 to 16 bit, 44.1 KHz, 8 channel card which plugs into a 2000 for $500 or
so is an EXCELLENT idea.
An external box that only does two channels and is extremely expensive —
have you priced that HA box? — is NOT worthwhile, IMHO. Remember, the HA
box does most of the work itself. What we need is a system that takes
advantage of the Amiga to lower the overall cost.
THAT was the distinction I was trying to make.

OK, Rick, I'll buy that (and probably in more ways than one). I'm not sure
if it would need to be 8 channel, the samples would eat a lot of RAM-but
perhaps it could be a trade off-sample on one channel and you record 8 times
longer.
Might also be nice if "whomever" is developing this (out in the wind somewhe
re, built one in a box that pluged into the 500/1000. Of course, if it didn't
then I'd have an excuse to buy a 2000.
I only priced HA stuff when I was comparing Amiga/Atari and it is very costly
I saw both you and Ben say you'd write the code for the right hardware-well
something that needs doing for the Amiga are more voice librarians like CZL
for the Casio. How about something for the Yamaha voice generators like the
TX 81Z or FB 01.
I have the TX and it is a nice unit. 8 note polyphonic that does everything
but tell you when dinner is ready. Only problem with it is that its difficult
to use all its features from the front panel.

There are more than enough people out there writing patch editors/librarians
that you don't need me getting involved in that. 8)

P.S. 8 or 16 channels doesn't mean you have to have 8 or 16 samples stored in
memory. You can have one sample and generate 16 pitches from it quite
nicely.

When I see them I'll believe you. Do you know of any commercial or PD
products for Yamaha TX or FB that I might have missed?

Well, how about the stuff from Dr. T's and Caged Artist, or from Sound Quest,
or from Triangle Audio, or…
Really, there are a lot of them out there, coming available rapidly. I just
finished an AC review on the Dr. T's release; the others are in the works.
