A good question. "Tiny Tafel" is a bit of a corruption of "Ahnentafel", a German word meaning "ancestor table". An ahnentafel is a method of listing a person's ancestors. In it, a rather formal numbering structure is used, but all the text is variable. Ahnentafels have been used by genealogists for well over 100 years. For an example of one, download BUSH2.ANC from Library 2, it's an ahnentafel of 200 or so of President Bush's ancestors. A couple of years ago, a method was established of exchanging surnames of interest between microcomputers, especially computers of differing types. This is a stripped-down version of an Ahnentafel, listing only the surnames of interests, the range of years and the geographic locations. It does not list individuals. The format of a this file is very rigid, every character and line must conform exactly so that the receiving microcomputer may interpret the data correctly. Since this was an ahnentafel reduced in size, it was nicknamed "Tiny Tafel". The tiny tafel format is supported by the Roots-3 genealogy program for MS-DOS systems. There are also utilities available for other programs/computers. There's a file in Library 7 that explains Tiny Tafels in detail. If you are interested, go there and download TTSPEC.DOC. – Dick

Dick, I think it is also worth mentioning here that one of the driving forces in developing the Tiny Tafel was to implement a very structured data base that could compare TTs and provide a report on matches. The Tafel Matching System was developed to do this. There are a number of Bulletin Boards around the country that have the TMS installed. I think that when you post your TT to one of the boards it is matched against the TTs on that board and then echoed to other boards via the National Genealogy Conference and matched against all the TTs on that net. (Howard please correct me if I have mis-stated the scope of TMS). The major mover in this effort has been Howard Nurse at Comsoft. Best Phil

You are right, Phil. The original idea for a Tiny-Tafel was proposed by Paul Andereck, then editor of Genealogical Computing. We took his idea and added to it to include a header (so you would know more about who originated the TT) and location information. One hope was that we could also link services such as the ROOTS Forum into the system, but that is still on the "wish list." In addition to the Tafel Matching System, the TT design provides that the TT be readable, so it is also suitable for publishing in other media. A TT can be created with a word or text processor as long as you follow the rules. In addition there are public domain TT editors for the Mac, CP/M and MS-DOS computers. There is also at least one GEDCOM-to-TT program of which I am aware. A TT can be extremely simple, consisting of 4 lines. At a minimum it will include your name preceded by N; the number of data lines preceded by Z; a data line consisting of the Soundex code, space, year of birth of earliest person in the family line, space, year of birth of the last person in the family line, space, family name; and finally the date of creation of the TT preceded by a W.

Agreed as to who "the mover" is. As I understand it, 99% of the work involving TT's and the TMS effort was done by Howard and the other folks at CommSoft. We all owe them a vote of "Thanks". (Howard – are you reading this???). – Dick

Thanks Dick, but many have been involved with the TT/TMS project. One of the biggest problem has been to develop the software to allow routing of queries and reports between bulletin boards. That has not been a trivial task as I'm sure you can appreciate since all kinds of possible routing topologies can exist. When a query is broadcast, it can go out to literally hundreds of bulletin boards, resulting in hundreds of reports. If loops exist or queries get duplicated, a nightmare can result. The primary person behind the routing software has been William Berthold in Cayce, SC, who has done a magnificent job. Many have also contributed by writing software which can be used to create Tiny-Tafels. We have intentionally distributed the TT spec to anyone interested in the hope that other developers would want to participate. Steve Vorenberg at Quinsept, for one, has said that he will be making Tiny-Tafel software available for Family Roots. All-in-all this has been an extremely rewarding enterprise with many contributors. Press <CR> to continue ! [76701,263] TTAFEL.THD 24-Feb-89 5857 Accesses: 21 Disposition !
