HELP!!!
Everytime I try to read mail with View! (when WHAP! is on the HD) I keep
getting Read/Write errors on the HD partition. When I try it from a WHAP!
3.5" disk, it works fine.
All functions for WHAP! work fin on my HD, with the exception of reading my
mail. Any ideas???

I read View! from my hard disk all the time, with no problems. I would
suggest that you back up your hard disk and reformat it, though, if you are
getting read/write errors from ANY cause! It 's entirely possible that you
are writing to the same questionable blocks over and over, I suppose.
(Actually, I don't know what is causing the problem. It has never been a
problem to me, so I'm only guessing.)

That's the weird part! I reformatted my partition and made my WHAP drawer
and assigned WHAP: to it. I tried it after that, and had the same trouble.
Apart from that little problem, everything else works great on the HD when
using WHAP!. So what I am doing right now, is, I have WHAP! and the reader
on a floppy, and all mail and files are sent/received to/from the HD. Works
great that way, but is still a nuisance to have to drag out the floppy
everytime I want to call.
I am using a Seagate ST 296N SCSI, which is by and large, very reliable,
and an excellent buy. My controller is the A2090. Perhaps WHAP! doesn't
care much for the A2090??? Could the DMA be screwing it up?

I also use the 2090 and don't have those problems — however my HDs are
ST-506, not scsi. The problem you are having may be the renowned 2090 DMA
problem — as View! uses a 5 bit plane screen.
The DMA problem doesn't exist if you have an ST-506 drive in use with the
2090?

I can't say for sure. I was under the impression that it was related to
scsi. I've never seen the problem with ST-506.

I just hooked up a new scsi drive to the 2090. I'm also heavily
overscanned (710 x 476). Running some software now gives me read errors
where the same software on a ST-506 didn't. So, I'd say, yeah, it's
limited to scsi on the 2090.

Thanks for that info, Steve. I've got an old 2090 around, and if some day
I can find an ST-506 for a good price, I'll be able to use it.

The last ST-506 I got was a 3 month old MiniScribe 8425F — 20M 40 ms — I
paid $120 for it.

Yes…don't forget, ST-506 at it's maximum rate is only 500k/sec
whereas SCSI is 1 meg/sec and up.

I don't have an answer. I used the 2090A with Whap! until very recently,
and with no problems. In just about a year of using it several times a
day, I never had a read error on the partition where Whap! was. So – I'm
stumped. Gee, I hope someone else will read this and jump in with an
answer for you.

Which version of hddisk are you using? You'll find the file in
your Expansion directory on your boot disk. You can tell by typing the
file to your screen:
type hddisk opt h
Do this from a CLI prompt. You can stop the information from
scrolling by just hitting the space bar. Hitting the backspace key will
start it up again.
In any event, quite near the beginning of the file is a version
number and issue date. You should have at least version 34.4 which is
dated in May of 1988.
The latest version of hddisk almost eliminates the conflict between
the 2090 and the screen display. That will probably take care of your
problem.

How old is your 2090? When I had my 500 and got my A590, Commodore
had installed an older version of FFS on the drive. Whap, and some other
PD-type programs would Guru; with Whap it was during the View mode. I
never got a Read/Write error, but it's still something worth trying. Use
your HD Toolbox and your WB1.3.2 disks to reinstall the FastFileSystem.

My HD is a year old. The local dealers couldn't get it set up properly, so
I took it home and studied, and formatted it with my own modified
mountlist, etc. I do know that I didn't do anything wrong, as I consulted
with others while I came up with my set-up.
Considering it has pretty much been read/writes with View!, I have to
assume that my 2090 software and/or card, is faulty.
I'm checking with the dealers about the V34.4 hddisk.device, but they
didn't even realize there were any bug-fixes… Shows what I'm in for, I
guess.

Reinstall FFS with your HDToolbox. From what you've said so far, I
doubt it will help, but having the most recent version can't hurt either!
The method is in the madness–er, manual.
