#XYXIS Optical R/W
7 messages in this thread
Hi folks I just wanted to make my thanks PUBLIC to the people on Ci$ and in
particular Larry Phillips. My little side job is done enough to show (I
hope) It a nifty new Optical drive from the folks at XYXIS (Xssss). The
nifty folks at Impulse are going to be doing the marketing so if your
interested give em a call. By the way the voice recognition system they
sell is the wildest thing I've played with in a loooong time. Or you can
call the XYXIS folk direct at (612) 949-2388. Ask for Tom (the wildman
Cowboy) and tell em Jay sent yea! Yee Haw! A weekend off at last!!!
What!!!! No details at all – just "give 'em a call"? Jay – we need to know
more – lots more!

Of course! 600 Megabytes of read and writeable (NOT Write once Worm stuff)
just like your trusty? Hard disk. Except it doesnt crash. It stores 31
sectors per track instead of 17 so you get more data on a swipe. It is not
S l o w. as I have seen the CD roms reviewed. It boots (if you want it
too) it can replace your Hard disk. I did replace my old Tandon as it was
getting noisy. And at a measly 40 Megabytes <grin> who needs it? DiskPerf
gave me some numbers on my stock 2000 that are pretty similar to my Tandon
ST-506. A tad faster on bigger blocks and a tad slower on smaller blocks.
I think thats to do with the larger number of sectors per track. It does
take longer to write than to read. Percentage wise thats pretty much OK
since Writing Overall is a small part of the total time. So I think that
for the most part it should be considered a very large removeable hard disk
that doesnt have head crashes or is trouble around magnetic fields. You
can alter it with a magnet alone but…. I think it would have to be a
TON? To do so without proper heating with the Laser. I have had a lot of
fun with mine since now I can store all of those 6 minute sound samples and
gobs of video on my A-Squared digitizer. The freedom to just throw
EVERYTHING on disk is really nice. Oh price wise you will have to talk
with the chiefs at Impulse and XYXIS but it isint anywere near what the
other companies are bilking for the Apple&iBM products. Yeah!!! And the
folks who should really be doing all the talking are those folks. I just
wanted to thank everyone for kind support during late night programming
sessions. I was starting to Veg out a few times <grin>.
Jay,
Thanks so much for the information. I do hope Impulse will start talking
about it soon – and with LOTS of info about price, etc.!

A little birdie told me the retail price will be $5999.95.
That would be enough to convince me I don't need one! 🙂
Sounds great, though.

Jay,
Congratulations on getting the erasible optical out the door. I
talked to the XYXIS people at Comdex last November and the mentionned they
were working on an Amiga version at that time though they made it sound
like the decision to market it wasn't final yet. I mentionned the XYXIS
drive in my show coverage report for Amazing Computing in the hope that it
would help even a little bit in tipping the scales towards a positive
decision to go ahead and market it. I'd love to get one of these but it is
pricey. I've just bought a Corel/Sony erasible optical for our Novell
network at the office and will have to content myself with playing with it
for a while. Now if only Commodore would get the Amiga Novell hw & sw out I
could use the erasible optical with my Amiga.
