#Hard Disk Organization

In a couple of days I will be recieving my first Hard Drive. I have
some questions for all you experienced HD users.
First let me tell you that I bought an 80Meg Quantum as part of the
GVP 3001. I did not get any 32 bit memory yet due to lack of funds.
1. I would like some suggestions on the organization of the HD. I
am
at this time figuring on maybe 3 partitions. A 30 Meg Workbench
partition, a 30 Meg software development partition (I plan to
learn
to do some serious programming), and a 20 Meg section for
downloads
and PD programs etc. (I might start a BBS). I may need to swap
the
sizes of the last two.
2. What is the best PD HardDisk backup program in the LIBS. I can't
afford a commersial one yet, unless there is no sound alternative.
3. Does it still say time to download to RAM: or VD0: with a HD or
the HD write the blocks fast enough so as not to slow down the
download.

I'd reverse the last two partitions…20 Meg for software
development and 30 Meg for program files.
Can't help you on PD backup programs…haven't tried any of them,
but perhaps some other member can assist there.
Download to the HD, it won't slow things down.

Thanks. Nice to know that I can download to HD. Now I download to
VD0 and last night a had a crash where VD0 did not recover. I lost a
little bit of stuff (messages downloaded with Whap).
I don't have to worry about that much longer. I call Creative
Computers today and they said my GVP 3001 would be shipping today. I
should have it tommorrow.

are you installing it yourself, or having someone else install it? If
you are doing it yourself, they aren't kidding about the anti-static
precautions. Other than that, it's pretty painless to do and quite
impressive once it's up. Let me know if you run into any problems since
I've done all of it. Good luck and take care.

Thanks for the "anti-static" warning. I do understand how sensitive
IC's are to static and will take the proper precautions.

Michael, I would strongly suggest that you look to a commercial program,
such as Quarterback, for backing up your HD. My experience with the PD
programs has not been good. In fact, one program trashed both partitions
on my HD early on and I had to re-build the files from scratch. That was
not too pleasant an experience.
