What do I need in order to get my Mac (SE) to display and print fractions
as they appear in the real world?

That would partly depend on what program you're using. Leave the answer to
that, and I'm sure someone can give you a short term solution to your
problem. Also, you may want to check out a (relatively) new program called
ParaFont, by Design Science. (We have a demo of one of their other
programs, MathType, here in Library 12.) It allows you to _very easily_
create up to an entire font of fractions based on whatever font you have.
(Well, there may be some restrictions, but I know it works with Adobe
fonts.) Here's the info I have on them:

If you've used Letraset's Design Studio, it let's you create a fraction
with a key command…
I'm looking to use fractions in Word, FreeHand and PageMaker (all Mac
versions). I guess I could put something together myself in Fontographer.

There's really no need to use Fontagrapher that I can see. I'm still hoping
to get a demo of ParaFonts for the forum, but I've seen it in action and
you can make perfect fractions (even from Adobe fonts) with it. It's a very
exciting new program available from Design Science.

The Adobe expert collections have a small selection of fractions and
superscript and subscript numerals with which you can create proper
fractions.
