DianneWhats your opinion on the value of the conference? I think it would be easier to start a thread so that more definitive answers could be given to the tough questions. Its hard to keep a short answer without some ambiguity. If someone wants to post a question, I'll check this section occasionally and try to be responsive. I'm generally in LAWSIG if you want to leave a message for me. -Jim

Jim, I thought it was fascinating, and am extremely relieved to have my questions answered. Since you volunteered, I did think of a question I *wished* I had asked… Many of our clients are corporate, and as such, are used to buying all rights to articles and artwork they pay for. We quite often use freelance writers and cartoonists to produce their publications. We *used* to be very small, and so just had people we knew write for us, but now that we are growing so rapidly, it's time we put together a contract, of sorts, for our freelancers. Anyway, the question is this: If employees of The Newsletter Factory write for one of our clients, how does it differ (legally) from using freelancers or independent contractors? Do we automatically own all rights to the employee's articles/artwork? (as I *think* is the case) Are the couple of independent contractors we use to be treated as employees or freelancers?s Dianne p.s. Thanks again for your help at the conference. I hope you and Fred do put together a brochure. I think many of use would download it and distribute it eagerly to our clients, as it would save us the work of doing it ourselves, and have more "clout" coming from lawyers. Feel free to include an ad for yourselves.
