Has anyone tried Adobe Streamline with or without CD?
Any thoughts on tracing etc. would be appreciated. I have CD, Ventura, a s
[D a scanner and a LaserWriter. I'm trying to scan basic maps – shorelines,
principal features, roads and cities.

Rod, I use Adobe Streamline together with Corel. It's a dynamite
combination! Streamline even has a menu option for generation of output
explicitly compatible with Corel Draw (in .AI format).
As for scanning maps, I haven't tried that. But from my experience, you'll
probably have little trouble with outlining areas, a bit more trouble
getting things like roads and cities. Abandon the thought of getting usable
text off a map. I suggest you clean the text off the map when its still in
bitmap form (you should really have some kind of bitmap editor if you're
going to be scanning artwork for use with Streamline; perhaps the one that
came with your scanner, if any, is good enough) then add the text back once
the artwork is in Corel Draw.

I have been using Streamline PC with Corel Draw! for creating maps of
various sorts for a couple of months now. In a nutshell–BUY IT! I have
used it to trace small, detailed maps of provincial data–as well as
complex world map outlines. Your .TIF files should be 300 dpi or better for
really good results. If you're going to trace complex .TIF files you had
better have lots of extended memory. Big, complex files may not trace at
all–or will trace very slowly without lots of memory.
The tracing capability of Streamline far outstrips any other program that
I've used on Macs or DOS platforms. You should be aware, however, that
Corel Draw!, Designer and other graphics programs are fully aware of this
market and will be enhancing their products to meet Streamline head to
head. Pat Beirne has stated on this forum that a new version of CD will not
be available this year. So buy Streamline.

I was interested to read your helpful comments on PC Streamline, but being
the "language" type of person that I am, I couldn't resist pointing one
thing: If you are a person who creates maps, you'd be a cartographer, not a
geographer.

Agreed a cartographer creates maps–but for a geographer to use!<grin>
If all I did was "create maps" (a design intensive skill) I might agree
with the title of cartographer. I have had some post-grad training, but I
would never consider my talent even close to that of a good cartographer.
Map making is only a small part of my job. I am also required to analyze
these art forms.

What exactly do you do? It sounds quite interesting. Do you analyze maps
for a specific profession, such as aviation or something like that? Sorry
if I missed a thread that explains your background; I've got some catching
up to do.

I was a high school geography teacher and head of department. For the last
five years I've been a "Program Advisor" (we used to be called
Co-ordinators) for Social Studies and Geography for the City of Etobicoke
which is part of Metropolitan Toronto.
My map-making skills (such as they are) are used to create resource
materials for teachers from kindergarten to grade thirteen (this final
level of high school is now called the OAC's). In addition, I am a
freelance writer in a variety of media.

Do you mean we shouldn't expect any wonderful new versions of Corel Draw in
1990?

I saw the message where Pat said that. What Pat didn't say was whether or
not they'd introduce some OTHER new product. I know they're all hard at
work at something, and I'm willing to bet it'll be great.

I know, I'd like an upgrade too. Pat knows of the suggestions for
enhancements that I'm after. Although I've been playing with Illustrator 88
recently and the "blend" command has to be the _most_ valuable feature of
that program. And it's missing from both AI for PC's and from Corel Draw!
If you're peeking Pat … please consider this kind of tool for CD II.

We've been using Streamline with Corel 1.1 for some time now with fabulous
results. The Streamline support for the postscript AI/EPS format can be
imported into Corel flawlessly.
